That would simply depend on how hard the paint was, if you are shooting paint that has a skin as hard as a rhino's backside then you can get away with a paint type that is high say 9 or above, but if you are shooting stuff that is a fragile as crystal balls then you need to run with a sub 4 paint type.

what happens if my setting is frigale 4 but it needs to be hard 8 what happens to the paint it's just a example

to the best of my knowledge, paint type works like this.
With a higher paint type (say 9 and above) this lessens the Ball in place time. Since the paint is pretty hard, it will have less of a chance of getting clipped and broken.
But say your shooting something like Inertia Pro or Ultra Evil, which can break from chest height every time. You would want a LOW paint type, so the ball can get into the breech and seated so it cant be clipped, as it would definatly break.
