View Full Version : Paint to Bore match question
Now this has to be the dumbest question I have ever asked but I'm at a loss. Here's the question, can you get too close of a paint to bore match?
Reason I ask is because I started using a .687 (06 Freak w/16" spiral ported AA tip) instead of my stock angel 1 .691 (2-piece, .691 back w/14" straight ported tip) my efficiency went up, but my accuracy decreased slightly and every once in a while I get a crazy curve ball. I am using the exact same RPS premium Green/Gold shell (yes I have noticed a difference in size with different colored shells) that I always use for general field play. Know I thought I had paint to bore all figured out but this one has me a little confused, I have yet to have a barrel break with the new setup. Is the Angel 1 kit just that great or is there some physics at play here?
Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and live with the velvet expanded barrel kit.

How many balls did you use to measure the bore?
I always test atleast 5 as some are bigger then others.
From what i have seen having the bore to tight will cause the accuracy to go down.
I always use the "blow it through" method, put a ball into the back/insert and if you can blow it through its good to go.
That's pretty much what I thought too. Usually run 10-15 balls through having to blow (with a little bit of umph behind them) maybe 5 or 7 times.

IMHO, I find that whenever I get a good paint to barrel match, I get really good accuracy, and improved distance.
However, every now and then I would notice that a certain batch of balls would behave like you described. From what I've read and experienced, even high end balls have variations that could result in significant variations sometimes. I beleive there was an article somewhere on the net about this--If I find it again, I'll post it.
I use a freak too, and get pretty good results most of the time, but there are times when I get really crazy curved balls like you described.
Keep in mind also that the material used to make the freak is different from the material in the stock metal, and also for instance, a stiffi (carbon).
So, these barrels may expand/contract at different rates; so they may perform differently from each other. I believe that stiffi is least subject to this variation since it is carbon and more resistant to temperature variations.
Anyway,...jus my thoughts and humble experience.

Carbon fiber actually has about a 0 thermal expansion coefficient

That's why stiffi's are so cool. Besides being light, they don't expand like other barrels. Only problem is that they cost a bit more, but in the long run, they're a good investment--until next year when WDP decides to totally redesign the threads again and make us have to change barrels! You hear that WDP--stop changing the barrel threads!
i have to admit that i was very disappointed with the performance from my stiffi red mamba, i even sent it to site to be checked out and have the g7 fly collar replaced with the a1 collar, and even after that the accuracy was alright but it would barrel break every once in awhile, where the same bore a1 back would not break the same paint. i guess its time to just get over my issues w/velvet black on my gloss black angel and pick up the expanded barrel kit. i just know that as soon as i do wdp will finally come out w/the expanded kit in gloss/different colors.

I don't have experience with the Mamba. I have the regular stiffi's. I was about the get the mamba, but then I started having doubts about it and went with the regular kit.
Are the inserts for the mamba carbon fiber also? Or are they metal? Also, how long are the inserts for the mamba. In the picture, they looked kinda short. I mean, the sizing breach has to be a certain length--forgot how long--but it seemed too short in the pictures, that's why I went with the regular stiffi (one piece barrel).

your insert might be damaged.
I use the freak kit on mine and its about as accurate as you could possibly expect a paintball gun to be. It matches my my shocker and pump cockers.

did you check the paint fit between the 2 backs? Just cause they are listed the same doesnt mean they are the same. I've seen bores listed at .683 that are actually a little bigger than .687.

Amen...no more barrel thread changes!

MVS1....I have a Joy A1 and couldn't stand putting the velvet kit on it. I broke down and bought it, then gloss coated (I think with 4 coats) and it has held up very well. Looks just like a gloss anno, and has survived the whole season looking good. Its an option anyway.

I had wondered about how that would work, Backman. I have a gloss black A1 and the only reason I don't currently own the expansion barrel kit is because it only comes in dust. I had considered buying one and waxing it or clear coating it. So gloss black paint holds up well? Do you recommend a particular brand of paint?

It was a gloss clear coat actually. It was a clear coat used on taxidermy fish mounts (durable stuff). Its made by a man named Bowen. You can find it at mckenziesp.com
I suspect any good gloss coat will work though. Make sure to take an alcohol wipe and clean the surface very well, and plug the ends with paper towels.
Backman tnx for the info. I've pretty much decided to get the expanded kit and I'll give that stuff a try.
Bleda after you posted it got me thinking so I mic'd all my freak inserts and all them where .002 (+or- .0005) smaller than what they said they were. Don't know why I didn't think of doing that sooner. The A1 backs where +or- .0005 of what they were labeled.
Backman did you use the "Master Gloss II" spray gloss coat?

No it was Super Fish Gloss, item number SG95, but I bet the Master Gloss would work fine too. Just make sure to wipe everything down with a thinner or alcohol based cleaner, my kit was covered in some sort of white powder when it arrived. Once cleaned flash coat it with a quick, very light coat and let dry for 30 minutes. Then apply medium coats letting dry between each coat. (oh and make sure to wrap tape around your threads and put paper towel in the ends. If you gloss the tip make sure towel gets all the way down in to prevent gloss from getting in the ports to the inside of the barrel) By applying multiple thin coats you will get high gloss with a smooth finish.
