Is the Freak system outdated? I am looking for a barrel and am unsure which to get. I have been doing a lot of reading the last 2 days and can not make up my mind. How about going the multiple barrel rought, like Dye, instead of a system.
Thanks.......

somewhere on aog, there is a thread that addresses these same questions. I think the name is like "Freak vs. Evil pipe" or something like that. they talk about freaks, pipes, scepters, and some others also.

I have read it...I was just wondering if it would be better in the long run to get single barrels in different sizes. I know it will be more $$ but there seems to less that could go wrong. You really only need about 3 or 4 different sizes to match most any paint.

buying 3 or 4 individual used barrels wont put you too much over what a 3 peice barrel system would cost.

a 3peice kit really shines when you have multiple markers with incompatible threads. an angel and a cocker for instance. drop 60bux or so for a new back peice and youre ready to go.

i'm very happy with my scepter kit.

is the Freak outdated? Is any barrel system outdated?

IMO....No and No....

The first question I always tell someone to ask if they are considering a purchase such as this is: Where are you playing and what kinds of paint are you going to be shooting? (okay so its a 2 part question). If you answer the first part of that with National tournaments then a barrel system is right for you. If you answer the first part of that question with locally, or rec-ball etc. Then it may or may not still be right for you. If you answer the second part of that question with a specific brand of paint, as in you will always be shooting Marbelizers no matter what, then you probably do not need a barrel system and 1 or 2 barrels would probably be right for you. If you answered with either "I don't know", "Whatever's cheapest at the time", "Event paint", or something along those lines then yes you do need a barrel system.

Now let's address a couple of things....you're apparently located in Northern Florida, why is that important. Well are you going to be playing in tournaments such as the "Florida Sunshine Series" or the others like it? Are you planning to play NPPL events? PSP events? Are you going to shoot the same paint every time? (and even if you are I still recommend at least 2 or 3 barrels). Are you shooting RP Premium at practice but you want to shoot Ultra Evil at the tournament. Are all your events local and you'll be able to practice with the same brand, and level, of paint that you'll be shooting at tournaments?

I put it this way.....I bought a freak, and went through about 4 inserts in a couple of months shooting everything from Blaze to Hellfire, Team Colors (event paint only it still sucks Rhino Testicles), and RP Premium....I then went to Cup and shot TC Venom, and Severe. I thought about getting a Sceptre while I was at Cup and the guys from Powerlyte do give a failry convincing presentation (I basically went up to them and said "Okay convince me that I should buy your system" and they tried). However had I bought their system, I still would've been unable to use it at Cup as the Severe was a .679

Now look at prices....Freaks are going for close to $200 (we'll call that the average), Pipes are going for about $180, Sceptre $175 (I think, don't quote me on that), Empire $225 (if you can find it), CP I think are also close to $200 but I haven't priced them so I'm not sure.

1 Boomstick costs $180!!!!!!!!!!! Holy COW! You want to buy 2? That's $360, you say 3? That's $540!!!!! That's a lot of dough. I say 3 because most people seem to want the size they're shooting and 1 bigger, 1 smaller just in case, and you're actually saying 4???? WOW!!!!!! That's a whopping $720, you can almost buy another Angel for that price. If you want to put it in a different perspective that's 11 cases of paint (at $65 a case). Or........and this is the road I think I'm about to take. Warped Sportz is getting ready to unveil their new system, 3 barrels in 3 different sizes plus the case to complete a set, for a lot less then $200. I talked with one of the guys from Vicious who used it in Vegas and he said it was really nice. Now that's not a barrel system, that's a complete set 3 whole barrels no inserts, no backs and tips etc 3 barrels the same bore all the way down....I'm going for a Lucky15 Hindean I want one bad

I can get 3 Boomsticks for $150. I only have the Angel. If I go the kit way it will be the Septer or Freak.

You can get a Freak kit for $169 many places now.
I do not at this time do tournaments at this time but would like to start soon. We are trying to get a team together. Right now it is mostly woods ball with some speed in there.
I use many different paints... I like to try different things.
Like I posted earlier I can get 3 Boom's for $150...but I could get a Freak for $19 more or for the same price a 3 piece Septer.
I think the Freak has more variations and possibilities.
Thanks.....still thinking....

Im personaly not a big fan of the freak. The J&J edge kit is a great barrel and what Im personaly using on my angel right now. Also look into the Powerlyte scepter kit if you own different types of guns (next kit Im going to be getting).

the scepter works great .. only downside is as emmit mentioned that it lacks a really really small bore sleave.

boomsticks cost 180 bucks? Boomsticks at my local shop cost 125, and btw you can buy an ultralite set by buying one complete and then the seperate backs for 70 each, pro paintball has them, look on their site www.4freeflow.com So if you wanted an ultralite set with for diff. sizes it would be 310. Oh and ultralites only cost 100

okay well according to DYE's site the Boomstick is $135, and the Titaniums are $185.....either way in the end that's still a lot of paint you could buy.

Emmit,
Is there going to be smaller sizes for the Spector?
How much, you are a dealer right?, are just the inserts and can I get them from you? If not where is the best place to get them?
By the way...I just bought the 3 piece Spector last night. Should be here by Sat. It is because of what i have read...I have read a whole lot in the past 2 or 3 days, and what has been said on this forum that helped me make my mind up on what to buy.
Thanks for all the input!
I like it around here.....

DCB....no I am not a dealer in any way shape or form....

As far as I know there are no plans to make smaller inserts for Sceptre, but you'd want to ask Powerlyte about that.

Sorry...my bad.
Where would be a good place to get some extra inserts?
Thanks

I like the Freak and am sticking to it. Prove me otherwise. Yes, individual barrels all one-piece will probably be a smidgen better. Not worth it in price difference, in my eyes anyway.

id go with freak, one it has 8 inserts and that will cover almost every size paint availble, plus you can get a different tip or back at any time for a different gun or prefered length. and if you step on an insert or bend one or something a new one is only 20$. and if you bend a regular barrel such as an ultralite somehow youll spend a lot more than $20. Not that barrels bending happens often.

just got a titanium paintball longbow in stainless steel, it's great, it's like 110 and you can get 3 bores for 219, after you chop and shoot 2-3 times there is a mirror finish on the inside, uses harbore, making it 6 time smoother than micro honed barrels. The titanium kit with 3 bores is 300, but ss was fine for me. I believe they have more than 3 sizes but 3 should be enough.

Well I have my new Spector.....very nice! I will do a run down on it and add it to the thread about the Spector around here somewhere.

IMHO, I prefer the Freak. Gone through several types of guns using the same inserts and a variety of fronts. Gotta love the SS back with a tip that matches the anodizing of the marker. I like how the fronts and inserts are interchangable regardless of what back you have. Come to think of it, I think I have even had to use all but like 1 of my inserts due to tournie and rec play.

In the long run, it once again boils down to preference and you, DCB, have made a good choice.

Just go with what feels right!

DCB, if i am not mistaken, Powerlyte has plans on expanding the bore selection, but not for some time (they have lots of other things on their plate).

Freak inserts arent always marked at their correct size. Just because you have shot paint through your .679 insert doesnt mean you have shot .679 paint. At MGO, the freak users on the team all used a different insert and all matched their paint perfectly. Meanwhile all the paint sizers (the template things) marked the paint at .686. My scepter 686 insert fit the paint perfectly. none of the Freak users were using a .686.

I have never needed anything below 684 in the 8+ months i've used the scepter.

And DCM, i was the dealer you were thinking of :D
