View Full Version : Cold Weather Issues - Gun Froze Up

I took my Rage A1 to Skirmish for the scenario game this past weekend. Weather was in the 30's, I have all the latest settings, all the right pressures, big bore size for barrel, lowered speed to about 270, 2.1 software, etc etc.
Ok, really crapping paint (because no one on the field shot the paint, lucky they had two types of paint), but before I could switch my paint I broke some balls in the hopper and broke every ball after that so my gun was soaked with paint all in the hopper, feedneck, barrel, etc. Ok I cleaned the bolt, feedneck, barrel, and hopper. My eyes weren't working which is fine, I assumed way too much paint in the eyes (they're working now after I cleaned them at home) so I turned the eyes off. Balls were detected in the breech, I was aired up but every time I pulled the trigger nothing happened. There was a WDP table, I asked a few questions and was told that maybe the stock lube in the inline reg was frozen????
Before almost giving up I decided to check the LPR pressure. I guess there was some trapped air so i figured that the air must be making it past the inline reg. The pressure looked fine and I was then able to get shots off. Walked for 20 minutes without getting a shot off, got on the field, same thing happened, gun froze up again. I decided to try to let that air out of the LPR again to see if it would work. I slightly unscrewed the cap of the LPR, I could hear the air escape, tightened it up, and sure enough I was able to shoot again.
The only thing I can think of that made the gun freeze up, I added some slick honey grease to the LPR area???????? Could that have caused my issue?
I took the gun apart when I got home, lubed with extreme angel grease, cleaned out the eyes, and everything is working perfectly again (although its not 30 degree weather when I was re-testing).

I used my A1 in a tourney a week ago. It was about 20F....no freezeups.

MT's what's up? Any idea what could have caused my gun to "freeze / lock up"?

We have had several of our A1's randomly lock up/shut down and we are in warm weather. It apprears to be loose breach doors that allow the bolt to catch and jam. Couple of the guys zipped tied the breach door down and worked fine the rest of the day. Just got message that Angel has yet another fix to hopefully solve this issue.

From our dealer this morning. I am taking the markers in today and will let you know what I found out.

I honestly think that feeding your A1 §§§§ty paint may be the cause of this. I mean you wouldn't give a Ferrari low octane fuel would you? I mean sure it will run but not at the same performance level as high octane fuel.

There is an upgraded "pin" that the breach doors swivels. It is my understanding that the early A1's need this upgrade. The way to tell if you have the upgraded steel pin is to placed a small magnet on the pin to see if it sticks. If so you have the new pin.

Yes but the problem that scarface is describing, is more like you pull the trigger and nothing happen...it is a problem I have expereienced and am woring to figure out as well. The gun is perfectly fine in warm weather but in cold it is like the trigger isn't event there. I have 2 A1's, both approx same age give or take a week. Both were in the exact same weather conditons, one worked flawlessly, the other I could not get to fire period unless I stuck it directly on a heater and then the velocity was all over the place. As soon as the gun cooled off, nothing, it would not work. The other gun was perfectly fine. Baffling, but the MT will get it solved,I will post here what the issues resolvement is when it is fixed.
The newer pins just make it harder to bend them when firing the breech open. Once the pins are bent, you will suffer from bolt stick.

Shadawg, you got it right. When I mean froze up, I mean I tried pulling the trigger and nothing happened at all. As I tried to explain in the thread, I figured I'd check to see if air was making it to the LPR, sure enough air wqas getting that far, and when I let the air leak out, tightened up the cap i was able to start shooting again.
Like a mentioned a wdp tech recommended that i "warm" up the gun becuase maybe the lube in the gun froze up??????
I did lube the LPR with Slick honey before the game so I'm assuming it was that grease that failed me. I've relubed with angel grease and I'm hoping if I play in that weather again, everything will be fine.
Was just wondering others had the same freezing issue and if they knew what the cause was. Is it possible to get paint inside the internals??? When I took the gun apart the next day I noticed all the internals were coated in a whitish filmy substance, I assumed it was the grease that came with the gun, now I'm wondering if it was paint?????? Is it possible?

I'm wondering if there's moisture somewhere in your air systems. If you're filling from a compressor, it may not be removing mositure from the air properly or if you're filling from a cylinder, it may contain mositure in it.
The moisture may be freezing somewhere in the gun due to the cold temperatures... plus the temperature drop from rapidfire.
I would try taking the gun apart and lubing everything in it with Hatersauce or Love Juice grease... then if possible, try filling your tank from a different source.
Also, don't forget to periodically use your Love Juice oil.

How noticeable and often will bolt stick occur if u have a bent pin. Also is there a way i could see if it is stuck? I have fsdo only after like 10 min. of not shooting.

If its bent then it happens every 3-5 shots (at least when mine was).

Increase your ABS setting and see if that helps. You could have genuine bolt stick that can be alleaved with the anti-bolt stick setting.

Yeah...ABS is a cool feature. Helped me out alot when my breech was screwed. Took my 3-5 balls to maybe a 1/2 a hopper. It was funny having to degass my gun ever 120 shots :D. We didn't win that tourney :P.
