View Full Version : G7 Ram/Hammer Weight Mod
Has anyone tried a modification to their ram/hammer to reduce mass?
My thoughts were to drill several 2.38mm (3/32") holes axially on the ram hammer, parallel to the ram shaft. The holes would extend from the striking face, through the hammer head, and all the way to the shaft face of the hammer body.
See attachment... a picture is worth a thousand words. Hole diameter may be too large, but it's a first guess.

I'm guessing this would somehow affect how much air manages to get in there. Now, if you did this from the back end of the shaft and drilled such that you didn't quite make a hole all the way through, it might work. I'm pretty sure, however, that holes all the way through would affect the air volume.
Hmmmm... I think the air only passes through the body of the ram. There's not actually a seal anywhere on the hammer. I'll definitely think about that though. If that's the case I might want to consider a circumferential milling of the back end of the hammer body. I'd have to leave enough lip to push against the bolt pin. Perhaps the same thickness as the hammer head.

But it's just so much more fun to do it yourself, no?

The nylon/polymer hammers are MUCH lighter than you will be able to make a steel hammer. The Lucky G7 hammer is 4 grams vs 25 grams stock.

7 grams is the lowest I would go. That is the minimum amount of mass to get the bolt to move and to have the valve to open properly. Been there and done that. Had a few discussions with Ken about it and he is the one that provided that magic number to me. Pretty thoroughly tested to verify it. Nylon will work but is to light and will affect performance. I know others on here will disagree with that but I ask you who would you take the advice from? Thought so! lol My titanium one is slightly heaver by a couple of grams and does the job.

yeah and I didn't see on Lucky's site where you could buy the nylon hammer alone. I don't really want to buy a whole new valve when mine works fine.

that sucks, i won't buy the lucky kit then. What if i bought the Lucky kit and the stupid hammer happen to get damaged, that means they want us to buy the whole kit. Not really convenient. BOO FOR LUCKY.

yea but thats just it. lucky is the kind of company that would replace just the hammer for you if you had the kit and it got damaged. but you still got to buy the whole kit.
