View Full Version : Rethreading myself or sending it away?

I'm trying to help a friend out by getting his A4 LPR end cap threads (inside the body) fixed however to do so it could cost me up to $125 for a special order M19x0.75 tap. I'm currently having a mechanic look into getting this same tap for cheaper. The things I fear are: trying to retap and striping the threads worse beyond recovery or sending it off to end up paying more then doing it myself.

A previous owner cross threaded the LPR end cap into the body, upon removal this is what I discovered:

Is something like this even fixable?

that looks harsh guy, I dont know if it can but anything is possible, just do to the very little amount of metal there for threads to be made that it might be a waste of $$$ but thats me, helicoil on the other hand MIGHT work but not sure

I agree, a helicoil might work, but again, that's a very strong might. I've had good luck with them before, but not on a marker or something that large.

What's a helicoil? I'm working with a friend who can possibly get me the tap for cheaper. Nothing new as far as updates.

It's a way to repair damaged threads that can't merely be re-tapped. Basically, you drill out the hold just a tad bigger, then tap that hole (sometimes the drill bit and tap are included in the kit, but not always). The HeliCoil itself is a threaded insert that you then thread into the new hole. This HeliCoil is the exact size (you buy it to size that is) that the original hold/threads were. They're really nice for automotive applications, but I'm not sure how it'd work with a paintball marker. I wouldn't recommend using a HeliCoil until you are sure you can't just re-thread the existing hole.

I have done alot of these repairs and they seldom come out right without messing up the anno job while doing it. If you wanted to redo the threads you would weld new aluminum and remachine and then retap. Just retapping removes more material and just makes it worse.

Try this first before you go as far as retapping.
If you give a couple of wraps of teflon tape around a NEW end cap and then thread it in very carefully you might get away with it. It has to be seated snug but do not torque it down. I would not advise removing that cap allot. You still run the potential of it blowing out. Every time you remove it start with a fresh teflon tape wrap job.

Here's to Chuck's new and improved A4 which I spent many hours on today:

or

It's pretty much a different marker now and it is hawt! No more rethreading, but now I'm getting ready to part out a whole A4 minus the body. PM me if you are interested in any A4 parts (the color was graphite if I'm not mistaken).

Not only is it very glossy, but it has a shiny chrome noid plate and back plate (didn't quite get that in the blurry picture I took...). Which sets it off in a bling sort of way. I love it too and I'm not really a red gun fan.

go to docsmachine.com he might be able to help. He can do alot of rethreading and he can do custom ano. If he cant fix it it cant be fixed. He is often very busy and he lives up here in Alaska so shipping usually also takes a while. But he is good.
