Yes, that's the origin of it. The reason why he said Saving private is because it was used constantly in that movie. Both are great flicks!

It's actually a very old military expression, that's why it was used in Private Ryan... it predates Lethal Weapon by about 40 years. However, Mel Gibson's character was a vietnam vet, so that's why he would have used it.

Watch any post WW2 war related movie and the expression FUBAR will most certainly come up.

fubar was actually used in Tango and Cash with Sly Stalone and Kurt Russell. Another good shoot em up movie
