I have been working with and on computers for the past four years and I still don't know what the main function of this thing is. Any help? I am guessing it prevents objects from getting in but does it also have something to do with EMI?

I must say I don't think I've come across that term for anything related to computers. I do know manufacturers use some sort of material to reduce emi transmission and interference to certain components. Or Many WIRES used for Input/Output Communication come wrapped in some sort of Foil material that reduces crosstalk and or emi transmission/interference. On what and where do you come across this IO SHEILD?

When you buy a motherboard it comes with a rear panel cover call the IO shield. You place it in the rear of the case and have holes cut in it for the various motherboards. Usually it is metal or it has a plastic covering.

I honestly think its a fancy name of a piece of metal/plastic that covers gaping holes in the back of the computer to prevent dust / objects from getting in.

I have noticed that on some systems that i've build that it helps keep the motherboard a little more stable. If you dont put it on when plugging and unplugging devices the board tends to wobble a little.

That would make sense. I just was not sure if was absolutely necessary.

Mabe Ionic Omission Shield. This would go along with the em emission, but not exactly.
