so im thinking about getting a freak kit for my 05 black to blue fade. should i get an aluminum back so it matches the anno of the gun and then get stainless steal inserts? or should i go with all aluminum inserts?

Well, aluminium is lighter. But, SS is higher quaility.

You're really not talking about a lot of metal. Those inserts are very thin, so I doubt you'll be able to tell any difference between the two when they are in a complete setup. So my vote goes to steel.

my son has a SS back. can't imagine that it's a significant addition in overall weight but we've never used the aluminum.

The balls never touch the barrel back, so there won't be a performance hit either way. Go with what you think looks best.
