My old hard drive crapped out , so I got a new 40GB Hard Drive installed and stuff at the local computer place, but now i keep getting "Critically low disk space" warnings(one time it said I had 41 mb left:yikes: ) so I checked to see if i could see how much space there actually was total on the hard drive and i see this:
Any one know whats wrong and how i can fix it?

That's got my vote, it's not a 40gb hard drive.

Format it as an NTFS hard drive. FAT32 is the wrong format... Right click on the drive and do a quick NTFS format.

Hmm go over to where you bought it. Then calmly hand the harddrive to the clerk that sold you the 10 gig one. Smile and ask him to give you a real 40gig harddrive. If there is no effort being made to get your real 40 gig harddrive. If not...then stab him in nads.

Wow, nevermind. If it says its a 40 GB HDD than it is. It has to be formatted correctly.

it is the settings in your bios. What size was the previous harddrive?
go into your bios and choose : default settings.
if that does not work. It is probably a setting restricting the size, i have a vague memory of something like that.

Did you try formating it? FAT32 is not a Windows XP suppoted format.

the bios settings is what you get when you press f8 or one of the f keys on start up right?
If it is I went to set defaults and exit, but still no better:notsure:

I still vote for the fact you got a 10gb hard drive. It is possible that for whatever error it got mislabeled at the factory and thus mispackaged. Take it back for another.

um... FAT32 *is* supported by XP, but the FAT32 format doenst support large .ie. 80 or so gig up. NTFS is NOT supported by previous OS's.
BIOS - no it isnt what you get when you press F8.
After POST (Power on Self Test - the beep) press DEL (setup) until a blue screen comes up... DO NOT GO SCREWING AROUND

W/E... I haven't messed with computers in a while. If it is a pre-built PC I highly doubt there is any functionality in the BIOS that will mess something up. If worse comes to worse you can just set it to defaults.
