Now when you click on the thumbnail of an attachment, it takes you to a new page with the forum layout around it w/ a few options and info about the picture. This will make it easier to navigate around after view an attachment.

it loaded in about 1 second for me.

You can actually change the image view settings in your CP.

Go to User CP
Click on Edit Options
Scroll down to: Show image attachments and [img] code in Posts?
Choose NO
Scroll down and click on the Submit Modifications button.

This will show attachments as a URL. Problem solved.

being on dialup you might wanna consider that option then.....then you choose what attachements you view

thats exactly why that option is there, and there should be no wait for the thumbnail and the large image, as the thumbnail really is the large image, hard to explain but if your system isnt clearing its temp files every 5 seconds there should be no wait on the large image if you are letting the thumbnail download 100%
