How do you know what version you have?
and how do you go about getting a software upgrade

To check the version you turn it on, press the switch inside the grip untill the top light is not on. The led that is lit up tells you what version you have. If the first light (bottom to top) is lit, you have the original software, if the sixth light is on, the you have the latest... to get the upgrade I don't know, I've got mine at a NPPL event where they had master techs available...
