Yup, got my first experience with 'em this weekend...while wife unit and I were out of town to cover a scenario game.
Right about 4:30 AM, I get this awful pain in my right side...sharp, achy type of feeling...then the back spasms start...by the time 7 AM rolled around, I was flat on the floor and my poor wife is fully flipping the §§§§ out.
I'd never had kidney stones before, so I didn't know what the problem was...my wife thought it was my appendix bursting.
Anyways, long story short, the ride to the hospital in the ambulance with no suspension did me more good than the ministrations of the doctor on duty in the Ocala Regional Medical Center's ER. By the time they got me in a room and started the usual insurance/billing interrogations, the majority of the spasming and pain were gone. A quick CAT scan later, the doc told me that I had a 4mm stone that had moved from my kidney to my bladder...no problem, have some groovy painkillers and drink lots of water. Shortly thereafter, the nurse put something in my IV and I didn't really care about much of anything anymore.
So yeah, §§§§ kidney stones and the pain and interference they cause!
P.S.: Anyone want to buy some leftover Percoset? :devil1:

That just happened to a friend of mine, AGAIN. He has had it happen abut 4 or 5 times now. It just keeps reoccuring to the guy, then again he doesn't take care of himself nor follow the doc's instructions.
Sucks getting old....

Welcome to the club brother. I have been getting them about every 7 months for the past 3 years. The last one was a 4mm one and really sucked. I had taken my daughter and her friends to the Yorktown Battlefield and on the way back it hit me really hard. I was still about 20 minutes from home and it was 20 minutes of agony the rest of the trip return trip. By the time I got home the pain was definately the worst I have felt thus far and had to have the neighbors watch my daughter while I went to the ER.
I must say for me, passing them is not a problem no matter how big they are however going from the kidney to the bladder really is the hard part for me. In all actuality I am overdue one right now so I am hoping my changing of my diet is the reason for not having one in almost a year but maybe they are just being produced a little slower. Oh well it'll happen when it happens and not a moment before.
PS, save the percocet for the next one you get. I swear, you'll thank me later.

I should only drink what I can see through? How much should I be able to see through? I favor dark beer, and I can see a little through most. Except for Guinness that is.

I believe there is new ultrasonic treatment for kidney stones, they use sound waves to dissolve it, so it passes normally. And on a different note, I have had the equivalent of a vicadent before for pain after getting teeth removed and I wasn't even sleepy, I was wide awake, is that normal?

I didnt think they used that technology unless they were a certain size, if its small enough to pass w/ or w/ out pain they just let it go naturally .... i could be wrong im just guessing from what i've heard... never had to experience it myself

yeah I'm pretty sure the ultrasonic technology (not really new by the way) is only used on larger stones. On small ones that are passable they let it go, just drug you up a little to help ease the pain.
My wife had one a couple of summers ago, and it was terrible for her, when it moves from the kidney to the bladder and blocks that tube it's supposedly excrutiatingly painful.

I am in a Medical Command here in Iraq so as a command we hear about the common occurances in theatre. You all might be surprised but kidney stones is near the top of the list. The cause for most is that most people (being in the military and wanting to be in top physical condition) run TOO much, followed by too much Gatorade. But when i say too much Gatorade I don't mean they drink like one Gatorade a day, I mean they finish running and drink one or 2, then they have one with lunch, maybe one in the afternoon, and then one in the evening. That coupled with running 30 miles a week or more will get you kidney stones in a hurry.

I'm suddenly not liking gatorade. How does gatorade cause kidney stones?

Gatorade is designed to return things to your system you lose through exercise. That being said, too much of anything and the body starts to reject it, in this case for a stone. Gatorade is also very acidic. While it's quickly absorbed into your system, too much of it is very bad for you. You should always alternate Gatorade with water, most people will even suggest 2 bottles of water for every 1 equal sized bottle of Gatorade (or any energy drink).

I usually alternate(or combine) one shot of jagermeister for every energy drink, so I guess I'm safe from kidney stones.

I have found the ultimate unharmful hydrating drink, H20, and it hasn't failed yet. Gatorade is alright, but I prefer water, it is thinner and easier to drink in a hurry.
