A USB port to connect the gun to my computer would be a lot more useful than an IR port for a PDA. Some kind of simple program could be used to configure the marker while connected. It would also simplify the software update process.

I actually really like that idea

Besides the fact that a usb port would take up a fair amount of room, use power and they dont release the software anyways. Mostly the last part ;)
I have an IR port built right into my laptop so I'm laughing. Besides the fact that they don't release the software...

That would be a great idea. you could change all your settings on a pc in stead of messing with trigger pulls and button presses.
this cable is the same one used for most digital cameras and as you can see the port is really small, wouldnt take much room on a board at all

It becomes and issue of load on the battery, though. Ever hook up an external HD to a laptop? It'll drain most fully charged laptops at 250-300% of the normal load. Vantage hit the nail on the head, that power requirements would need to be taken into consideration.
Although perhaps there could be future integration to allow a USB port to charge the marker while 'synching' data.
