my dad went to lsu for a fire training thing so he could go back and teach at osu
lsu canceled the training thing, so they sent him to new orleans for help
he told me that all the power was out in some town and they hadnt ate so they picked all the chips around from a vending machine that had been blown over
and apparently there wasnt as much flooding done as they thought..only around 20 feet, but i heard that before they were actually in new orleans, so it might be different

And gas is up too, oh well, its 5-7 bucks per gallon in Europe, so I just laugh when people complain about prices, however cheaper is better for my wallet.

BUT.... they also have many more means of public transport in Europe. So, they do spend alot less on gas a month than we do :)

i had a cat 1 come through my neighborhood when i lived in VA. It was strong enough to do millions of dollars of damage to the city.

I don't know that I'd trivialize it at all. My mother lives in Gulfport, Mississippi. She's been without power since about 730 on Monday morning. I have not been able to speak with her since about 1030 that same morning. My father is in Iraq and neither of us can get in touch with her. This was before the eye passed over the Gulfport area. She's far enough away from the coast that I'm not worried about any of the storm surges getting to her, but they have a lot next door that has never been cleared and has lots of large trees.
Like it or not this storm was and still is very catastrophic and the effects will be felt for a few more months to come.
I really wish she could've and would've gotten out. We left Charleston when Hugo came through back in 89, I don't know why she decided to ride this one out.

I pray that she's OK. Our Ohio FEMA Task Force just pulled into Gulfport!
Have faith that God is watching out for her and as many others Emmitt!!

Well I did finally hear from her about 830 this morning. She had to drive into town to get a cell phone signal. I was glad to hear from her, and that the house sustained minimal roofing damage. She's going to need some cleanup and some minor repairs (shingles, vinyl siding etc), the well house needs repairs as well. She has no power and there's no estimates on how long before she gets it because of how far out she is and all the power lines/poles are down.
Getting to her would be hard pressed right now because apparently one of the large major bridges that is part of I-10 is OOC. My dad is at least trying to get home from Iraq to help out, not sure how much he's gonna be able to do but we'll see. I know in years past the Navy base used to send out Seabees to help out in clearing for homes of the guys in the units. My dad has been retired for a few years and I doubt they know anyone down there anymore so I don't know she'll get much help with that either.

my dad came back and he has some freaky stories
one is-
him and his team were driving the boat with the guards(you have to have arm guards with you for protection, because they WILL kill you and take everything you have if you show them that you have water, or anything else they need) and they were working in the projects(literally) and the armed guards finally found a way out of it(they got trapped in the projects because a house or something collapsed and that was there only way out, because there was a road block blocking the other way out) and everyone around them started to close in on them, then this big bus drove around the corner to help them get out of there, but when they got to the bus, someone on my dads team started to drink his water and then everyone got on his ass because everyone was going to start to come around and probly kill them so they can get that bottle of water, so after a while, the bus was pretty much gone because everyone got in it. so my dad got everyone together so they can run through the road block and get out
luckly they did, but apperantly some women with a baby stuck the baby out in front of the boats so that she could get some water...that boat had to turn and go around everyone so they wouldnt hit the baby
that was the last day my dad was there
the first night he was there, they started to put everyone on the highway, and apperently they put EVERYONE that they could get that night on the bridge, which wasnt a good idea, because, as you know, new orleans has a lot of gangs..and there was a stabbing and a gun shot that had killed two gang members
i have some other stories of him there, but i just thought id share those with you to see that new orleans is completely chaos right now and they need all the help they can get from us...
ive already sent a ton of bottle water with some people that were headed down there to help
just plain scary:

Well, yesterday they finally found one of my buddies. He lives in P-gula and decided to stay with his house on the bayou. He was washed out of his home when a 20-30 foot wave took it out, all he had to hold onto was a small 2x4. He eventually lost that when he hit a house and ended up getting stuck on the house for a bit until he got washed off of it. He then found a 2x6 with a nail in it and drove the nail into his arm so he wouldn't loose the board. By this time all of his clothes were torn/washed off. He ended up washing up somewhere and going to a house. The people were nice enough to take him in, clothe, feed, and take him to the hospital. He was one of the lucky ones to make it alive. I've known Al for at least 12 years and I know that he's been through some tough stuff. When I heard his voice and talked to him, I knew that it was going to take a looooooong time before he becomes the person that I know after a tragedy like this.
I know that in another thread we are making fun of and bitching about the price of gas. I will gladly pay 3+ dollars a gallon, because that means that I still have a car to put it in.

they need to bring them buses for them people. sounds like to me they dont care.
they have plenty of buses there now, at first they couldnt get the buses there
but now they are gettin 15000 out a day, i believe
and they do care, its just, i dont think they want to die for people shooting at them, would you?
and they couldnt get any water to them because they blocked off some lanes to get there, and they couldnt get organized enough to get water the first day or two..but now its rolling in
they just need more help to give to the people of new orleans and what not
Too bad they did not use their own busses to evactuate. Its looking to me like somebody was not doing their job:
