The X-Ball game format was the brainchild of Procaps (manufacturer of DraXxus and Diablo paints) president Richmond Italia. X-Ball departs from a typical tournament paintball format by incorporating some features seen in other mainstream sports, like the quarters in football, and the timed penalties found in hockey. At the same time, it simplifies the game scoring system to award a single point for a flag hang. Rather than being a single game that ends with a flag hang, an X-Ball match consists of a number of games played within the time constraints of the clock.

XBall™ Games will be the most exciting Paintball you’ve ever witnessed”, says Richmond Italia of Diablo Paintball, world class Pro Player and 10-year Industry veteran. XBall takes Paintball, and adds exciting twists borrowed from Hockey, Football, Basketball, and NASCAR, to make the game a lot faster, way more dramatic, and much more fun to watch”.

Stadiums full of Spectators!
The new XBall format has been brewing in Italia’s head for over ten years. Today, he believes the Sport is finally ready for big public viewing audiences. He adds, “Paintball has been evolving for twenty years. Europe’s Millennium series is already achieving standing-room-only stadium crowds. XBall spectators will see genuine extreme Paintball games, formatted like the legitimate sports played on prime-time television extravaganzas, and in the Olympics.

Mix equal parts of Paintball, Hockey, Football, Basketball, and NASCAR:
The new XBall format will inject the Game with a huge dose of constant action . Italia says,
“ Just like Football and Soccer, the games will be played in four quarters. Teams will be driven to hang the flag as many times as possible, before the buzzer marks the end of each quarter.
Audiences will thrill to see Teams aggressively facing each other, Game after Game, hang after hang, until each match is over, and the next two Teams take the field”.

Pit Crews?
Each Flag-hang begins a 3-minute break for Teams to get re-set in “The Pits”.
In this hotbed of action, you’ll see Pit-Crews scrambling to get Players ready between games.
Imagine Pit-Crew uniforms, Paint-cooler carts, goggle cleaning stations, speed-pod re-fillers, and all kinds of special gear, invented by the Teams, in their frantic effort to get every Player re-started on time. In just 3 minutes, hits must be cleaned, tanks re-aired, packs re-filled, barrels cleaned, thirsts quenched, and Players back on-field, in time for the re-start. If any Players are late, the Team plays the next Game without them !!

Player Substitutions and On-Field Game Coaching:
Like many sports, 5-Player XBall Teams can suit-up 10 Players, making substitutions during the match. After each flag-hang, Coaches can use the 3-minute Pit-Stop to decide which 5 Players will return to the field for the next scoring drive. Coaches will consider the score, game-time remaining, Player talents, and remaining stamina. You’ll see sub-Teams forming for Offense, Defense, Scoring, and more. Like Basketball, you’ll see coaches communicating with players, calling in last minute strategy change-ups, plays, and occasionally throwing fits and tantrums!

Commentator’s Command-Tower and Score-Boards:
The Official’s Command Tower is a mainstay feature in every pro sport, from Baseball to Football, NASCAR to Formula One, and now, Paintball. From high atop the tower, officials can communicate with referees for critical calls, entering data into the game computers. Viewers from every part of the arena can view the scoreboard for vital signs, including scores, remaining game-times and penalty-box times, and Players’ Chrony-speeds, transmitted instantly from on-field chronographs!”

On-Field Chronograph Speeds transmitted via R.F. signals:
XBall takes a strong stand for safety. On-field chronograph speed violations are just one infraction that results in an immediate penalty-box visit. Judges will conduct on-field chronograph checks, and the results will be instantaneously sent via R.F. transmitters to the scoreboard, for all to see.

Scoring and Penalties:
Paintball’s complex scoring has been replaced by simply awarding 1 point for each flag-hang.
The Team with the most points at the end of regulation time wins. Tie matches will be decided by a sudden-death game. Players that commit infractions normally resulting in penalty points, eliminations, or 1-for-1 penalties will be sent to the penalty box. And, just like hockey,
that Team will play short-handed during that Player’s penalty. Assessed penalty times are based on the severity of the infraction.

XBall debut: Diablo International Amateur Open 2002
The XBall format will premiere with the first annual “Nation’s Cup Invitational”, scheduled for August 7th - 11th in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, USA, during the Diablo International Amateur Open tournament. The event promises to be a great showcase for XBall and the Paintball Industry.
