View Full Version : Walking the Trigger

Okay, I got my IR3 early last year, my first angel, straight from WDP as there weren't many to be had in the states yet. I loved it from day one. Took my max rate of fire on my old gun, (about 8) up to 10 on day one.

After a couple months of using the trigger and practicing at home with one finger, I got up to 13 as a normally usable maximum when I REALLY need to lay out the paint, as in sweet spotting and the like. I've tagged 15 as the absolute max but 13 is my normal max for a day of play.

However, nine months since I hit 13, I can't seem to get any faster. Looks like I've hit the speed limit for my old hands for one finger action. I have a nice trigger job and I can play with that if I need to some more, but there is one thing so far I have NOT gotten down.

Walking the trigger - alternating fingers for firing. I just cannot get this down in any sort of useful fashion. I realize that a basic answer is, practice, you'll get it eventually. Not sure why, but I'm stuck on this one.

I can get it to fire on the bottom half of the stock trigger every time, but I can't seem to get the index finger to get a clean shot off next each time, I often leave the index finger on the trigger to long and miss the middle finger bottom pull that I am normally good at.

So, I come here looking for any sort of advice, inspiration, or ideas on how to get this little operation down.

How best would you teach someone (without being next to them in real life) how to walk the trigger?

Any tricks, things to focus on, methods of training that worked for you?

I do wear gloves, but they're thin and I don't think that's the issue.

Do you think a flat/blade type trigger will help? I know it will change the whole feel, but has this helped anyone in walking the trigger?

Thank you in advance!

When i walk my trigger, I "slide" down the right hand side of the trigger. My fingers touch the trigger and slip/slide of it. That makes the trigger sort of snap back.

Thats how i do, would be nice to hear about other techniques though.

ps, I must say that my flat Cobratrigger is awesome for walking.

I wonder...which trigger position (of the 3 ) is the proven best for the higher ROF? I believe the rear is for the downward pull, but will the front give the higher numbers?

start off slow, dont try to max out your walking speed when trying to learn to do it. Personally when I'm walking, I don't even hold the grip frame with my right hand; I just sort of hold my hand against the side of the frame and shoot. You will also notice me (in person) tapping my fingers simultaneously on desks, my leg, or anything else trying to get faster. with the stock IR3 trigger in the rear pivot point, I will put my index finger on the bend in the middle of the trigger, and my middle finger will hit the tip of the tail (actually pushing down instead of pulling). With my technique, I hit 15 with no problem on a regular basis.

hope I helped!

I do that tapping thing too sorta......drives my g/f crazy. I find things that will make a little sound (like the battery cover on the TV remote) and start tapping like crazy.....

I have the same problem...between playing paintball and bass, my index and bird fingers get a workout!

I had some of the same problem trying to walk the stock trigger. Just got a Cobra stick trigger and have had much more success. It just seems easier to find the trigger with both fingers consistantly. Although in the heat of battle I find I still go back to one finger.

I tried out a stick trigger saturday, and I really was not impressed..I can shoot way faster with the stock trigger because of the way I hold the gun..

YES! I'm not the only one that annoys the hell out of non ballers with my amazing tapping fingers! It really does help to speed things up when you consantly "tap". Gets your fingers into a natural rythm. When you do it, make sure you fingers travel an inch, that way you won't have problems one finger not pulling the trigger. Also, how do you have your trigger set up? A very short trigger pull did not let me walk consistently. I have about a 2mm pull, with the firing point at the very tip. Allowed me to hit 17bps walking it.
Good Luck, and happy shooting!

I can't walk an iR3 trigger to save my life. I just have it set in the back pivot and tap down on the hook. I can hit 12 bps easily now with this set-up.

I can walk a blade or flat trigger though... I just prefer the tucked-in position I can get pulling down on the iR3 trigger.

what i do when i walk i use the first knuckle or joint or whatever u wanna call it to hit the trigger. works a lot better for me than using the tips of my finger

Get yourself a Cobra Flat Trigger... makes walking the trigger soooo easy... that is the only way I can shoot left handed.. i have to walk it otherwise i'll only shoot 9 - 10 bps lefthanded.

The Cobra Flat Trigger has to be the best thing I've put on my IR3.

Am I the only person that just picked walking triggers up the first time trying?..seriously, not trying to brag or show off or anything, but the first time I tried walking a trigger was on a trix..I hit 14 my very first time (measured over a chrono)...it just felt natural for me I guess...weird?

I used my ir3 for the first time last Saturday. I hit 11 bps average the whole day then I hit 15bps at the end. Pretty fast considering that there is NOT A THING done to the trigger and is in the middle pivot.
I tap my fingers in class all the time. I did it in detention one time and almost got me another one.
heres a tip: Get a pen and hold it at the very end with the left hand. Hold it about a cm above the table and with your right hand start walking it. It lets you hear how fast your going and drives your classmates crazy. MUAHAHAHHA/

i also do the tapping thing, but i often just do it in the air, as if im shooting.

When i was learning to walk the trigger, i found it very helpful to start slow. I use my index and middle fingers, so i just took my time and over emphasized each motion. Eventually i got faster and faster, and it became second nature.

haha i do that pen thingtoo...i started doing it during some standardzed state testing and the teachers running the test got all mad at me. but yea thats how i worked my walking speed up to 16 bps

yep, ball point pens with a little metal clip to put on your pocket work awsome, gives a nice little click:puzzled:

This is how i practise my fingers, i turn och a record and "tap" the fingers in rhythm of the musik.
When you get better you can speed up the music

i do this in 2 steps step 1 you can do and get 13bps (at least i can with practice).
1. instead of using your index and middle finger use your middle on top and ring finger on bottom (these are faster than your regular ''stance''
2.Try walking now and see if that helps

i have a suggestion for you..Maybe tryin a different trigger. The impact Triggers are really nice and soo sweet. If you dont put the spring in it makes walking the trigger soo much fun and easy..My first time tryin i was up to 14bps

I tool a rubber band and wrapped it around my index and bird finger and practice that way it helped me out alot it gave me the rythm and fire rate and I got a Losoya trigger either that or i take a squirt bottle and practice shooting water in the air

The best way to walk the stock trigger on an Angel or IR3 is to make it a longer pull. Simple. You cut a few links off your trigger spring, and make the pull like 3-4mm and I'll guarntee you can walk it ez :sshh:

capnut
03-25-2003, 10:46 PM
well, .........the secret is a shorter pull and the way i hold the gun. i rest the back half between my thumb and first finger....just let it sit there ....now use the side of the trigger and work it from there..........but your setting must be right to. like your dewell: 14-16 & rof .....and i use the pin in the trigger.....but also i did some mode to the trigger so, this helps too..this is what works for me....19bps is not bad.....good luck

Im glad im not the only one that does the pen thing. I thought i was weird. sometimes if im holding a pen I'll walk it without knowing it. Its weird, I have to walk the pen sometimes or I'll go nutz.

what really sucks is when you're in a meeting with various accounting gurus at work, and you start tapping your fingers like you're walking the trigger......that's not really a good thing when they all start staring at you

All I can say is practice makes perfect. All I did to learn how to "walk the trigger" was just walking around the house (yes i have no life ;) ) pulling the trigger. Thats all I can say.

holy darn i thaught i was the only one who did the taping thing i drive my friends and everybody crazy the think i am a freak but i just have a passion

back to the subject i tend to have my thumb under the back of the grip frame and my middle nuckles on eather side of the trigger and my left hand suporting all the weight on the tank drop or the bottem of the gun and i do just fine thats my two cents

I just walk around everywhere with my iR3, i even go to the store with it, just playing with the trigger. I've put 30,000 shots on it in one afternoon just carrying it around the house for a while.

OH My Goodness - You all are evil - I read this thread not even knowing what walking the trigger was, now I cant stop practicing - But the bad part is this - I am right handed, always have done everything right handed, but I cant walk the trigger for sh*& with my right hand, but my left hand screams, now what do I do???!!!

ha, u guys have some good ideas... as for the tapping thing, i can take that 1 step further...

i tend to mimic firing positions sometimes. i was daydreaming in class once, and my prof asked me what the hell i was doing. i told him i had gum on my fingers :-\ . just sit there and wiggle your fingers, it relieves stress

but probobly the best thing EVER that has helped my trigger finger, is... video games... they will really get your hand eye coordination going. even just typing helps... i dont know what i'd do w/o first person shooters. i'd say they are the only reason i outshoot my eggo.

i havnt read through all the post so someone else might have put this but i have a stress ball and if u use that for a while ur fingers will hurt and feel tired, but then practice, now i can hit way faster bps

everyone should practice with both hands. once you can rip with both hands youll find playing tight bunkers a whole lot easier, especially snap shooting on both sides.

sorry if its already been said but i dont feel like reading it all and im here to help you out and just give some input.

Get a stress ball, and just squish it over and over again in your hand. after doing this for a while i will garantie you will get 3-4 bps more

dude your going about it all wrong, you cant walk fast, thats called running and thats what i do i dont use the two fingers locked and move them back and forward i use my finger tips looks more like running little legs but yeh man check out all your trigger options, and i dont even know if an ir3 can get much more than 18bps so your almost there

Try placing your mouse on its side, and practice "walking" on one of the buttons. I do that at work alot. Or even just tapping fingers on desk, or whatever will help bring stamina. Sounds stupid, but if you dont practice you wont get better.

Also if you spend alot of time at home, just walk around with your gun and practice, even while watching tv or whatnot. I do that alot too.

i actually use three with my right hand which is not my good side it works out very well.
also practice instead of tapping the normal way (simlulating trigger pull) tap your fingers the other way against the edge of the table so your tapping your finger nails.
That seemed to help me not keep my fingers on the trigger for too long.

to continue the discussion???:dunno:

some threads are worth bringing up again (so long as we don't repeat something already in the thread) and some just aren't worth it...like classifieds or posts asking specific questions on how to fix something that's over a year old etc...
