Played for the first time yesterday on a wood-chip covered field. Some people had shin guards but no knee pads, some had knee pads but no shin guards. I'm wondering if either is better or if both provide the necessary protection to your legs.

I use THESE (link) (http://www.flurryindustries.com/rekngu.html) which are a combination of both. I love them. They work great on the woodsball field.

They look like Renegade Pads 2k.

Bigal, what kind of protection are you looking for? If you wear paintabll pants the material itself is enough to take the sting out of most shin impacts. Very little of your shin will ever be in contact with the wood chips. Kneeling your knees and toes will have contact. Laying down your shins could have contact however they will not have any weight on them so the need for pads is neglegible (speeling?).

My personal preference for padding is the pants with built-in knee pads like Dye 04/05 and Airtime pants. They might feel a little funky without a pad wrapped around the knee but believe me they work and work well at that.

I pretty much play woodsball all the time, its kind of woodchippish, and I don't wear pads at all, call me a idiot, call me tough, I don't really care, but those pads trigga nometry suggested are nice, I might pick some up.

I had never considered shin guards but some guy was wearing them yesterday so I thought he must have had enough experience to know if he needed them.

The skin on my knees is torn off today so I you're probably right, only knee protection is required.

Who in the world would go shin guards only? LoL

If you really want cheap shin guards get soccer ones, knee guards are more important though.

....you're individual style of play and the field conditions will dictate the style and level of protection required....

...as an example, I "normally" play a back position for the team I'm on, so I just use volley ball knee pads for that occasional time when I do take a knee for a particular shot behind a short bunker once whole team advances up-field during pushes. On a rock strewn or packed field, I switch over to skater/roller-blader type knee pads that have the hard plastic cap on the front for more protection...

...if you're a front or mid-player and do any sliding into your bunker on your knees, a combination knee-shin pad system would be good, but the fit must be good, else it moves around and ends up not protecting as it should.

...fit is also important so that when (and if) you run, they don't shift around and bind your joints ability to bend/flex properly, inhibiting your movement...which also means weight is a consideration as well... this will aslo determine your 'comfort level' as well...

After seeing what happened to one of the guys we played with (he took a bad fall on his knee and shin along with his HPA tank. He really could have used the protection. Right after that, we all invested in some knee/shin protection for the woods.

You're going to cringe at this but I used to play woodsball with a mask, short sleeve shirt, gloves, shorts, knee pads, and cleats. I'd run through just about anything too. Perhaps this summer on the hot days I might switch back to that outfit.

the worst injury I've had playing paint ball was to my knee. I slid into a bunker that had a sizeable rock sticking up out of the ground (like an iceberg) in front of the bunker. I've done something similar in the woods sliding in leaves that covered a tree root.

I guess I'm lucky though, my son broke his foot at action town playing in the woods.

i have Dye knee pads and absolutely love them. you can kneel on anything and not feel it. they don't move around or anything. i've never really felt the need for shin pads.
