Does it matter which way the insert goes into the barrel? Does the inside of the insert taper towards one end? I can't tell.

The freak like the old palmer barrels actually has a larger diameter mid-bore section then the two ends. So both ends are supposed to be the same and the middlel of the insert has a larger diameter.
So it doesn't matter what way you put it in. BUT, it is a good idea to put the side with the largest countersink towards the breech. This is the end that looks like it has a bigger sloped edge.

I put mine in so that the bore size label on the insert shows through the window in the back. I have never had a problem doing it this way and it has always shot good for me.

Ditto spliff, I use it that way, never any issues. Seems to me it was meant to be used that way.
My inserts ussally have a better bevel on one end than the other I always put that end facing aft.

Mine shoots the same either way. But why can't they print a little arrow or something on the insert?

The first sets that them made, or first generation I should say, had a chamfer on one side but not on the other. There used to be a problem with some ripping paint but, now they chamfer or break both edges so there are no burs. There should be no problem wihch way you put the insert in.
Mine works the same either way.
