Ok last Sunday i reffed a tourney (philly americans were there so it was really cool) and afterwards the field had open play and some of the teams that had played in both the young guns and open division in the tourney decided to stay and play with some of the people just coming in. At the begining of the open play i along with some other refs did the usual and declared the normal rules. One of the rules we have is that there is no bunkering UNLESS all players decide it is ok, and we only allow it if there are 10 players or less (so 5 on 5 or less). Well these 8 kids come down varing from age 15-18, of course they are trying act oh so cool by walking all wierd and saying how they bunkered joe shmoe last weekend during a tourney and how they are so well known at the field i was reffing. Well i know everyone pretty much if they play there b/c my team refs alot thus i know most people by name. Well these kids had never played before and just to make sure i asked the owner who was next to me if he knew them and he said no, and he radio'd his wife who said that they had just signed there first waiver to ever play here and there ride (a mom) said that they had just bought there markers, which were mostly high end markers. Later i found out they were all in very wealthy families from Erie and such. Well they were there about ten minutes before they started making fun of a friend of mine, his name is Andy and hes 13 and an extremely talented player (team took 2nd in young guns that day). Well they said that he sucked and that he was to young to play. Well he said why dont you prove it with a 1 on 1. Well the kid said how about 3 on 3 (two of his other friends), and said that andy could pick any two people. Well he asked me and i got my friend tony from my team to play with us. So we go out on an pipe field and they yell you know theres no bunkering allowed. I immediatly tell them that if they say ok that its allowed, and no faster than its out of my mouth they say SWEET, oh are wee going to bunker you guys bad. Let me say that the pipe field is where everyone can see, so the other 5 of his friends stand behind the netting right behind there start, and to make it better Sean the owner came over to watch and stood next to the 5 of them just to make sure there was no cheating. And adding to it everyone who was there new sean only watched really good games and they knew tony, andy, and i were so there were about 30 people watching this one game. When the game starts 3-2-1, go go go I bolt out and drop to a knee and start shooting, tony and i hammered this one kid who ran right into our fire right off of the break. The other two (consisting of the really mouthy one) got behind bunkers. Andy took out the non-really mouthy one in the back right leaving just the really mouthy one in a small bunker on his 30. Well being a n00b he started firing at every angle without even looking. So tony and andy kept him down while i made a mad dash and bunkered him really good (about 8 shots, oh and this is the really mouthy one). As SOON as i got him he stands up and simotaneously (sp) with his friends starts yelling that theres no bunkering and he was really getting in my face and angry. Ok if it was not good enough Sean the owner (a some what big guy, non really fat though) yells SHUT UP! NOW! And he lectures all 8 of them on good sportsmanship and that just b/c a plan (bunkering) back fires on you does not mean that you change the rules. Well they start mumbling and saying that Andy is still to small and that he sucks even though we beat them. Well i walk up to the one i bunkered and his friends and say that there is no reason for this hating going on and that everyone here at open play is an equal adversary and should not be put down. As i walk away they call me a coward and say that i suck and if they were really ready that they would have beat us, so i lay the trump card. For those of you that remember i was the one that had a collapsed lung and had 8 really bad scars. Well i show them the scars and say that if i had not had surgery a month ago and was not still on the mend that the game would have been over in half the time. Lets just say that you just had to be there to see there faces when they saw the scars and heard that this was the first time in nearly 2 months that i had run or even participated in a sport. After that they said absolutely nothing and left soon after. Usually i conduct myself a little cooler since i am representing the field but you know what after all i went through in the hospital (lost 30 lbs, and i am only 155 and 19 yrs old to start along with a scholarship possibly since i had to withdrawl, and medical malpractice, which is why i was in there so long)
well there is only so far a person can be pushed especially when a friend is also being pushed. \
Oh heres a pic of the some of the scars if you have not seen them.
