My laptop has taken another turn for the worse. As it stands right now I could say open internet explorer or any other program and it would be completely opened say as soon as February. I would say within the past 24 - 36 hours this problem has occured. I get an intermitent virtual memory error or overload something.
I have not loaded any programs in my computer in the past month or so. The only things that have come into my computer are updates for my anti-virus/anti-spam software. When checking Task Manager under the Performance tab it's pegged at the top for CPU usage and I am not doing anything on my computer at the time.
Is it possible my antivirus/antispam software are maxing out my cpu? It's got a 2.4ghz or something processor and like 512 of ram. It's not a baby laptop so it's really hard to believe that it's being this slow. Unfortunately my desktop is now faster to do anything than my laptop which previously it was the other way around.
Anyone have any suggestions to fix my laptop? Yeah yeah, I know I can call DELL and their customer service rep will waste an hour or my time trying 6000 things that I have already tried.

I'm no computer geek but one thing i know for sure is that some time a software will eat up every empty space you have and leave you wit no more memeory.
My mac it was Norton and Macafee screwing the the hard drive of 160gig left me with only 700mb to empty the software out.
You might want to check the CPU usage see wich is eating the memory and space. I a utility I use for the Mac.
but PC :notsure:

sounds like adware... have you ever tried ad-ware SE or spybot. look em up on download.com. Also if you only get on the net ect ect it shouldn't be your memory but i may be. If it does turn out to be adware or worms ect ect, I would strongly suggest trashing explorer and outlook express, go with opera or mozilla firefox as a internet browser... other than that i would have to work on the computer to tell ya *shrugs*

In today's computer world, 512 mb is not very much.
That said, I'm betting it's spyware. My daughter's computer was slowed to a crawl and all it was to fix it was loading adaware and removing all the crap she had picked up from surfing the web.

could be adware, time to defrag, reinstall windows, bill gate$ is the devil.......
also if you dont regularly reboot windows can get real dumb.

Man, I just ran adaware for the first time. 1300 objects to be quarentined and deleted! And a few of 'em wouldn't come off! No wonder my shiznit was running funky!
Anyone know why when I click on "My Computer" it comes up w/ some silly Dr. Watson thing that says it can't find it?

I have state of the art anti-spyware programs watchdogging each other, I defragged this morning. Vantage worked with me a little via AIM and hopefully the problem is isolated in my spamkiller program.

are you mcafee?
All our computers use mcafee but our laptop is overwhelmed with mcafee. it's a lot like yours in that it doesn't have a lot of memory and mcafee kills what's left.

It's McAfee Spamkiller and the 26000 pieces of spam mail it was supposed to have deleted but archived instead. Now I have a task of manually deleting them weekly.

What an ignorant comment.... Virtual memory errors have nothing to do with the laptop manufacturer.
Dell and IBM both make great laptops...
