Way cool.
I just came back from the Arabian Gulf and six months of being on a carrier. It never gets old to go out to "Vulture's Row" and watch flight ops. On one occasion I went down to the flight deck at the "LSO" platform and watched from there. At the LSO platform you're just a few feet away from the landing aircraft. I got some GREAT photos if anyone is interested.
Non Hornet pilots call the F/A 18 "Lawn Darts" because they have so little fuel that they don't go very far.
Im interesed in the pics man that stuff interest me, i really though about trying to be a pilot... but i like money so ima be a MD instead

you know the cost of a g7 isn't really that close to what it takes (costs) to fly a hornet for that amount of time.

This is one of my favorites. I had to resize it way down so the picture quality is pretty poor.

That was my whole plan growing up was to fly F-18's for the Marine Corps, but a quick little motorcycle accident in college sent that one down the tubes. Still went into the Corps, just didn't get to fly. Those are some of the BEST dual-mission fighter/attack jets in the world. Glad you guys enjoyed it!

hmm. well my plan was to fly for the air force. they didn't like my academic performance well enough to take me into ROTC (my lucky break). Then I found the Navy and thought what a great deal to fly off and on a carrier. But before I could point out to them what a great pilot I'd be, they thought I'd make a better submariner. And the rest is history...
I think it's funny to listen to the Tomcat pilots talk about Hornet pilots. The hornet, I'm told, basically has a computer that flies the plane. So Tomcat pilots don't have a lot of respect for Hornet pilots. Lots of jealousy I guess.

Sometimes it's easier to have a RIO with you to help, too. Hornet pilots are solo. That was one of the attractions to me, I didn't have to be responsible for the life of someone not flying the craft. And I'm thinking that the computer prob. isn't controlling flight in air to air ops at all. Not to say I wouldn't happily hop into a Tomcat... ....the finest air to air jet made IMO.

it was really cool to watch the hornet on the catapult. all planes, just prior to launch test their control surfaces, but with normal planes, all the surfaces act in unison, for the hornet, the left elevator would be pitching up while the right was pitching down. The only way that could happen is if the computer was in control.
I think you're right in air-to-air. No one would want to leave that up to the computer.
How bout this... if you allow it, the computer would land the plane on the deck of the carrier. That takes a lot of intestonal fortitude.
