I snapped up a few pic's today at the shop so I will leave the verbage to a minimum and put the pic's up. This isn't done so haters please check your ignorance at least until a pic of the final product is up.
For those of you who have been forced to listen to me blabble about this project for the last few months, know that it makes me feel a tad bit vindicated to finally have something tangable to offer.
A few notes:
* For those who arent familiar with the DM4 internals, these are those...in an Angel.
* The Contract Killer grips worked out so the LED lines up on the grip as it should.
* The membrane is set in a recessed area where the buttons use to sit.
* A4 Fly straps and 5peed eye covers are being fitted for a unheard of DIY moment.
* Slayer trigger in a LCD frame...just cause I guess
* double detents, blah blah blah here come some pics...
Notes added 03/15/2005:
* SIX - Next to the membrane you can see the trigger mount
* SIX - You can see the mod to the trigger to create room for the switch
* SIX - I peeled back the heat shrink to make the wires more "managable"
* SEVEN - There is a gap between the top of the strap and the cover
* TEN - The right side with the unthreaded detent...same gap
* TWELVE - You can see the cuts and recesses made for the strap & cover
* TWELVE - The blind hole will be moved up to tighten up the strap and get rip of the annoying gap. Luckily this was the only setback so far and it can be easily covered up.

Cool stuff! I can't wait to see it when it's done. Breaking stuff is fun =D
I have a project somewhat along these lines going on too, except mine is much much worse =)

In the long run the important thing is that it works, not that it is pretty. However I have nothing better to do than worry about it coming out looking nice :notsure:
I will be updating the pics as the progress continues.

how are you securing the newer eye covers like that on your gun?? I was gonna use those on my Ir3 but couldn't figure a way for them to fit and be secured

Number one you need to plug the holes above the diverter plate then for the 45 frame a pocket needed to be milled out where the sensi pad would go. That's how it is secuerd in place. The actual straps are going to be cut so it looks like || instead of \ |and then I bought 5peed eye covers that are being radius'ed to meet the contour of the detent. From there a "pocket" the shape of the radius'ed eye cover will recessed so that the eye cover sits almost flush with the body lines, but not quite flush.
strap = rubber
cover = aluminum
I was surprised how many people asked me to explain that, but to make a long story short it will end up looking like the eye-q conversion as it pertains to the eye straps/covers.

I got eblade eye covers right now on my ir3 and I am just not feeling them.. Make sure you post a good pick of the gun with the eye covers on when you are done.. I wanna see how it looks :)

how did the drilling go?
Vantage_TeS
03-14-2005, 01:29 PM
Well the divertor is there because the main passage is blocked. You just drill the main down the main passage to connect it directly, then cap off the two holes for the old air passage (around the cops rod) and the two holes for the cops rod.
Considering you already have a passage as a guide you wouldn't even need a drill press for this one, just a long ass drillbit.

i was just pondering the fact that it would be a bit of a pain 2 get it in a drill press but even more of a pain 2 get it on a lathe
Syentific
03-14-2005, 04:56 PM
I am not machine savy. I know what a lathe looks like and I know what a drill press looks like. The shop that is doing this has two machines that look like if you were to pull the hood back you would find robocop sleeping in them.
There are various ways of securing the materials to the one machine where the other looks like it takes tubular stock, but it had like 10 different cutting tools on one rotary mechanism that had its way with the stock.
As far as the gas gally goes, the machinist is using a 4mm bit to bore the straight line. I was trying to talk him into going bigger (LP), but he didnt feel comfortable driving a bit that small down an area that long. Evidently there was a bit he thought about purchasing that is designed for that type of travel, but then additional cost comes into play...

what eyes are you using, i was under the impression that fly eyes work at a much lower voltage than most other eyes?

I am using the DM4 eyes, but I may just switch it over to the new Pro Series that Tag is selling. It would pretty much just add the nifty red glow like the Laser eyes do.

ah right, are they on a ribbon then because i dont think that your going 2 get them 2 fit neatly under the fly covers, without milling a channel down the side .
im well gutted, wish id capped the air channels and not taken a chunk out of my grip frame now

No they are not on a ribbon, but I am not seeing any issues with them fitting nicley under the straps. I peeled the heat shrink off to minimize the size and that made then fit pretty nice.
As far as capping the air channels, I am glad that I went that route. It seemed like a little more work but I think the end result will payoff.

i think it is a totally awesome idea. i just dont understand what advantage it serves. just buy a dm4.

It proberbly works out cheaper than doing the the fly install,
The dm4 board can accept different chips.
modifying stuff yourself is fun.

i just really dont understand the idea. so dont flame me. and i take that is a no. so it is just like replacing the board and eyes such as in the fly conversion, except dm4 board and eyes.

03-23-2005, 01:26 AM
yes, correct.
the purpose of this is to give the gun eyes, a faster board, the ability to take aftermarket chips, and most importantly... for cool points ;)

All of the above, but mostly cause I found a sweet deal on the board and wires and at the time I was mad broke. As the project progressed and I gained confidence in the machinist I decided to try the Eye-Q covers and straps.
It turned out nice but the thing I really like is with the trigger cut in half almost it is a much much lighter pull and the switch snaps it back in place with more ease.
At the time I started this, there were no plans or announcments for upping the code on the WDP boards so that was just an added benifit. But mostly I liked the resale aspect of being able to swap chips and the "instant" on feature that comes with the new electronics.
Plus the DM4 programming comes with a FSDO feature built in, which as we all found with the Speeds could be annoying.
Now that the re-assembly process has begun there are a few minor details that I want to iron out before I begin to post pics of the final product.
Thanks for the interest guys and stay tuned!

03-25-2005, 02:52 PM
- The dm4 board, wires & eyes I picked up for $100 with a tadao chip, then turned around and sold the chip for $30.
- Hybrid grips were $20 I think
- straps and eye covers were another $20
So like $110 out of my pocket just for the ACE.

Although I'm anti-marker hack jobs I will admit that this project came out exceptional well, by far the best modification to an Angel yet. While it's unfortunately that you "ruined" the IR3 with DM4 electronics, you show a lot of TLC in going about it. I suppose that's the Angel owner in you coming out.
Thumbs up!

Unfortunately I did not perform the cutting on this job and the friend that did is extremley busy. It took him months to nickel and dime this the way I wanted it around his own schedule and I would not ask him to do it again, not even for myself. It was a burden for both of us. He let me know on many occasions that had he charged me his regular fees to do this that I wouldve been better off taking it to the MT's. :notsure:
Sparco
After I bought that fly from you and yet another JD fly I was forced out of the sport due to family obligations. Shortly there after I picked this IR3 up for a crackhead price. I quickly realized the downgrade would not suffice, but I had no money to send it to the MT's. I found a great deal on the parts and had access to a machine shop so I went for it. This project was a manifestation of my desperation and nothing else. Nonetheless sacrificing quality, more than I already had with the dm4 parts, never became an option.
