View Full Version : The Truth About the Speed 04

Ok, I've been wanting an Angel for a while now, but I have had no experience, and no hands-on time with an angel. The angel that I am maybe trading for is a Speed 04.
Now... I've heard various rumors, comments, etc. about this marker. Some people state that the Speed 04 has the most technical/mechanical/electronic problems out of all the Angels, yet I read up on PBReview and it is claimed to be a whopping 9.6/10 (175+ reviews). I also heard that you guys on AO also aren't satisfied with your Speed 04's. There is a Tadao'd Gen-e Trix that I am looking at and comparing to this Speed. Basically, its between the Speed and the Trix.
Any former Speed 04 owner's comments and any historical information with their Speed will be helpful. Again, I know I am posting at AO, and there will probably be some bias, but please try to keep it as un-biased as possible. I want an Angel, but if the Speed 04 is not easy to maintain, then I'm sticking to the Trix.
Thanks in advance.

being as unbiased as possible...
ANGELs are some of (if not) the most maintanence free markers available.
SPEEDs are very reliable (id get an extra sensi strip just be safe, about $20)
SPEEDs as with any ANGEL is designed to be tourny ready out of the box. upgrades are mostly personal preference. the one i suggest most is the MT retro, its not "needed" but it will turn a great marker into an incredible beast!
ive had my SPEED since '03 and havent wanted anything else (with the acception of a FORCE), and have had no problems, at all.
as far as "technical/mechanical/electronic problems" the '03 speed was the first of this design followed by the '04 speed, the A4, the FLY, and the MT's FORCE models. so i can see someone saying that the '03 SPEED could be the most problematic (as it was the first release of this design) however like ive said ive had no problems with mine (and wouldnt trade it for anything). WDP did change the solenoid and the ram since mine was made, so "your" '04 will have the better components.
and as far as maintenance goes, keep it charged, wipe it off after you play, and then put it away. about every 8 cases or so put a couple drops of love juice through it. and that is it.
i was using a tippmann A5 when i got my SPEED, and the SPEED was only the second marker ive ever owned, and i was able to understand it, shoot it, and maintain it.
i have to give alot of credit to this site for helping me understand my SPEED, so i felt confident owning and using it.
but when all is said and done, you buy what you feel most confident in, as thats the only way that you will be happy.

The only problems I have with my speed these days is the occational barrel break due to shotty paint and the fact that I still don't allways remember to turn my air or loader on.

as said by the people before me here, i'm not really sure why others say Angels are so hard to maintain. i have been guilty of hardly even taking care of mine (basically just wiping off after a day of play, no lube/tuning/etc) and it has never had even the slightest problem. i say go for it

Only problem I ever have wit my Speed is the occasional complaint of a kid/parent that i am shooting "too fast". And after getting it the MT fly conversion it's just an amazing performance boost...I wouldn't trade it for a G7
Edit: you won't be dissapointed, as they say the ppl that hate angels r the ones that can't afford them

ive been lookign for upgrades in stuff... where should i get the stuff u are talking about.
How much does the FLY conversioni cost? Any aftermarket triggers for the speed? Is it possible to install G7's?
angelguy3
02-21-2005, 05:57 PM
Get an MT trigger.
welted
02-21-2005, 06:00 PM
The fly conversion costs $350 for the Euro LED board, and $400 for the Fly LCD board. both have the same exact functions. check www.angelforce.tv
As for Internals, other than the Bolt, which is the WDP softface, i don't think the internals are compatible (and you can't get them yet anyway)...
and the MT trigger is the way to go. check the sponsor sites at the top of the page

ANy modification needed for a MT? Is it just drop in? magnetized?
angelguy3
02-21-2005, 06:14 PM
Well no, you just need to know how to Remove a trigger and put it back in. It's simple. No it's not magnetic.

I'm just another speed lover chimin' in that i've yet to have any problems with my speed. i cant see myself shooting anything other than this gun it's just absolutly unreal. when you get it just set 'er up to the MT settings, i did a magnet and rubber band mod and i can't even believe how fast this thing is, it's just rediculous. This site is also the best place to learn about anything angel in my experience i've learned tons just shuffling through here and reading random threads lol. anyway welcome to the angel family.
and by the way that blue to black is friggin sexy, i didn't know they came in finishes like that. it's bitchin'

on the MT trigger are the screws to adj the trigger the same as the stock trigger? i want the pull and such to be the same as is now. cuz i cant set the darn thing right
Sloffie
02-25-2005, 12:05 PM
yes, and whats even better about the MT trigger is that the front set screw is externally adjustable if installed unside down, this is hard to explane but because the MT is closer to the frame, thier is a space that it does not fill just in front of the trigger, and the front set screw is accesable through that hole, im pretty sure this was an intentional design benefit the MT's thought up.
ckyxx87xx
02-25-2005, 12:10 PM
yea they are the same, but after you get it right super glue or loc-tite it so the set screws stay in place..

were do you get the intelifeed from and how much is it and is it hard to install
welted
03-29-2005, 11:53 AM
look around the site, there are descriptions of how to install it and what you need, but in a nut shell...
What you need: Hopper, Intellifeed cable (from sponsor sites), soldering stuff.
how to:
1) cut wires from hopper motor to battery connectors (no longer need batteries or board in hopper)
2) solder intellifeed cable wires to hopper motor wires
3) plug intellifeed cable into your angel board in the HOP port
4) mow faces chop free

well he's asking the truth about speed, so he's obviously interested in some other hard stuff and you know what the gateway is....my guess is its some ill hash. (j/k drugs are bad, in all forms. paintball is good, esp angels)

this gun is one of the most matnence free guns. those rumors are crap. i have had no problems with the gun. its worth the money

imho. i have owned a gen-e, NYX, proto, and now a speed. We still have the NYX and I traded the proto for my speed. I would say stick with the speed unless you love maintaining your gun. You know it cant be good when you get your brand new proto and it comes with a BOX of replacement parts. mine leaked air sometimes, had problems with the eyes for a month or so and not to metion that a trix is the biggest gas hog there is. they both shoot darts. they both are low pressure. I would also play with one first because a trix is a Large gun, pretty light yet but as for height its big. I love my trix still but if i had to pick between the 2 id say the speed is your better buy.

if you do now t want to do any matnence other than greaseing then buy a angel. does not hogg air. is some what light. rarly ever chopps. and is at a good price. the 90 degree grip is very nice. you have to never worry about if you are going to out shoot your gun( unless you can shoot more than pbs). if you are going to by an angel then get a egg with Z board. some people had troble with the halo b and some did not.
you can take the sensi out if you have a halo hopper. or get some eyes
this gun is the best priced for your money!!!!!!!! :mt: :biggthump

If you are serious about upgrading....kepp it simple and rip at the same time. Go with the EuroSpeed conversion. It keeps the same simple LED screen but gives the gun a large.......boost, and keeps it very tidy looking. I love my 04 Speed. Also have an A4 Fly that rips, but I always go back to my Speed. I have A.I.R. on it, it IS a little heavier, but I like being able to control every aspect of my gun.
