UNOFFICIAL NEWTON VALVE REVIEW (05 SPEED)
Note was working on this before all the great reviews came out (Furby’s, Trigga’s, etc.), but I thought I would post it anyway to reinforce to others that this really is a quality kit and the performance is there if the time is put into it.
First and foremost this product is outstanding in presentation and build quality. Furthermore this product delivers on nearly all of its claims except on the claim of efficiency, which I did not truly get to asses.
From the beginning.
The package appeared to me upon opening it another reiteration of lightened valve springing coupled with large volumes of air provided by high flow. My impression was that maybe the kit was overpriced for what you received. A long volumizer like piece, an adjuster cap, a delrin hammer, the unusual looking valve stem, the LPR gauge, a ram adjustment tool and a little baggie with bits and pieces (springs, adjusters, o-rings etc.)
My eye immediately seized on the bright red delrin hammer. I picked it up and was doubtful that such a small piece of plastic would have the mass to open the valve (trust me on this, it does). After removing the stock hammer from the ram I was astounded to compare the weights of the two. I did not have an actual scale to weight them precisely but to make very conservative estimate I can say that the new hammer is at least 1/2 the weight of the original. The truth is probably closer to 1/3 the weight of the stock hammer
NOTE: The original hammer is threaded and locktighted into place by WDP. This made it very difficult to remove. Unless you have the proper tools or consider yourself Angel savvy I would recommend having someone install the entire kit for you (Impact Paintball). I used a 2 rubber straps and 2 plyers. I removed the locking screw on the hammer and then applied direct heat (via lighter) into the hole the screw was in so as to transfer heat right onto the locktighted threads. It worked for me. But I think this may be dangerous if overdone since you do not want to damage the o-ring on the shaft via heat conduction.
After the hammer set up came the adj. LPR cap set up. This was one of the easier aspects of the kits instillation with it essentially merely being a LPR cap swap. ALTHOUGH READ SHORTCOMMINGS BELOW. There are 2 screws on the cap. The one directly on the tip for actual psi changes (in is lower, out is raising) and the locking screw after the adjustments have been made. There are a lot of adjustments introduced to the operation of the angel with this kit so set it up first before locking everything down and follow the directions closely.
NOTE: The lpr MUST be at 100psi prior to adjusting or there will be shoot down. Additionally, many have been experiencing FSDO. When I pulled my cap out of the box and inspected the parts, I noticed that the lpr cap components were not free flowing or particularly smooth. After installation I experienced the same thing. Later I pulled the components apart, swabbed the entire interior of the cap body with a Q-tip including the piston, and generously re-greased all of the components once again (Angel Love Grease). They did feel a bit smoother and I have not experienced the shoot down or FSDO again.
The final piece of hardware is the valve body/volumizer +stem installation. A bit of a balancing act to get the spring into the valve body/volumizer while aligning the valve stem, the set sits in place without a hitch and once on is quite easy to adjust. Once on like, the LPR cap, it has the valve spring adj. at its tip and the lockdown screw on the side.
NOTE: Use the valve stem first to push the valve spring into its appropriate spot at the end of the v. body/volumizer before putting the kit together. It sits snuggly in there and you wont have to worry about it coming out as you try to get the stem to sit appropriately.
After the components installation, the kit does require some fine-tuning for blowback (something generally unheard of or unaddressed in angels). Granted generally angels are set up to shoot flawlessly (and mine did until I started tinkering with it) out of the box and he idea of having to tune your angel is a bit of an oddity. But if your one who tries to push the limits if performance right to the legal edge, then a little contribution on the users behalf is not a big deal.
Follow the tuning instructions as per evolves directions. After tuning, and addressing the shoot down issue, the marker felt extremely good. All trace of kick nearly vanished and the marker was on point for consistency and accuracy without effort. The marker cycles fiendishly fast (it may induce euphoria so have a witness present, the 818 video is dead on in capturing the performance of this upgrade). My 5peed begs to be continually ripped on the trigger (my paint consumption increased by about 1/3 case.) All I can say is that the kit performs flawlessly. Even the consistency was a surprising +/- 4fps right after install. I went to the chronograph and was shooting hot without changing the input pressure (if you change this drastically you have to retune the marker for blowback again). I was really surprised. Big ups to evolve. With regard to efficiency I did not specifically count the total number of shots I gained but did realize that I required less trips to the fill station. I was originally getting about one loader and 3 pods from my 45/4500 conquest (filled only to 3k). With this same fill I was getting 1 loader and roughly 5 pods with air being left over. Overall, the parts seem to be precision manufactured and fit perfectly together. Again big ups for evolve. There was a lot of doubt regarding this kit from many sources. This kit surpassed my expectations. It performed as advertised and really altered the behavior of my marker. If I have to leave a quote on the performance of my speed: “Its just not right!”. Be prepared to be constantly checked by refs for an illegal marker. Many would be hard pressed to have experienced this kind of firepower.
There are however shortcomings. Many individuals who have bought this kit have been having problems with shoot down. A major contributor to this is the fact that the company strongly recommends having the LPR set at 100 psi before slapping on the adjuster. The reason for this recommendation is for lpr recharge rate. If you do not have your LPR set at this pressure than there will be shoot down (This obstacle has been overcome by some by just setting the pressure via shims only as opposed having the adj. cap). Unfortunately, a slight oversight by evolve is not to include extra shims in the kit despite its relatively heavy cost. This prevents complete setup upon receiving the kit and was a small disappointment. The shims that were included in the speed were not enough to raise the LPR to the recommended evolve operating pressure (I only attained 75 psi with 6 shims total). After calling impact paintball (awesome guys, big ups NJ) some shims were at my doorstep within a couple of days. With the LPR now set appropriately I dropped the LPR to 50 and dwell 9 (my starting point). My final settings as of (1-17-05) are:
LPR: 105 psi adj. to 47psi
Dwell: 9
Inline: (?) 255 fps (indoor) +/- 4 fps
Tank Output: 400 psi
Hopper: 4 LED’s
T. Offset: 3 LED’s
Recommended Sources: Trigganometry’s posts. His walk through is outstanding and photos are extremely useful. Without his posts it would have been much more difficult installing the kit. Shout out to Trriga on a job well done.
