View Full Version : Dwell and breaks

Is there any possible association with barrel breaks and the dwell setting on a marker? I'm trying to narrow down the possibilities with my marker's habit of breaking balls in the barrel.
I initially thought it was paint but after shooting marbalizer, draxxus, and diablo balls, I see no difference.
Any comments? :notsure:

yup, ram adjusted to firm click. LPR 64psi, med volumizer, dwell 3 lights, fast hopper setting and halo b.

hmm
well all i can say is i am still chrnoing + - 20 fps
with a good paint to barrel match and tested 3 different paints
I am now getting barrel breaks
max i can chrono for the indoor field is 260
I also tried 3 different barrels
of
688
689
691
( paint seemed to match the 689 the best)
*yawn
I even emailed WDP and was told to up my dwell 1 light
even after doing that,
adjusting the ram,
using 3 different paints
and 3 different barrels
i still get breaks and very bad chrono fps
it is sad I have to take at least 3/4 of a hopper to try to chrono this marker for a game
I also adjusted the ram as per the manual
I now am at a major loss
I do not play with any settings on my marker ar all
only thing changed was the dwell as WDP advised
and the hopper lights are set for my hopper
It seemed to run great last week in practice
but last night
wasnt even worth the ride to the field
i purchased the same brand of paint as we used friday for practice
i did the best paint to barrel match i could
i tried 3 diff paints
and 3 diff barrels
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
they are not chopping
just fps is sad,.,,,,
and a lot of barrel breaks

rover-rich. Try returning your dwell to stock settings....i think 5 lights...

abcito I'll raise my dwell and try again.
Davew, I'm right there with you. Just wondering what temp you were playing in? Also was it wet out? I was in about 50deg temp and really moist/muddy playing field. I wonder it temp and humidity has anything to do with it.

Well that eliminates that one. How old is you gun? I wonder if they are from the same "lot" or date of manufacture? Mine was puchased about 3-4 wks ago.

Remember, there is a break-in period of about 10000 shots, this is probably why there are velocity fluctuations. As for the barrel breaks , try raising your dwell and lowering your input pressure, thats about all I can think of other than shoot a big bore barrel

davew I'll check the date on the box and let you know.
Thanks winter001, I'll try raising the dwell, can't lower the input pressure as I'm running a fixed LP Crossfire tank. I don't have davew's fps fluctuation problem, mine is pretty stable after adjustment. I also have barrel kit on the way and hopefully will be able to try that later today or over the weekend.
Thanks guys, misery loves company!! And thanks for all the suggestions, gotta work now!!!

10,000 or 1000
here is what WDP told me
after i asked what the break in perios was
After about a 1000 shots,
Check your paint to barrel match
All the best,
Frazer,
and yes with the freak kit i do match up as best as i can

I've always heard 10,000, you can lower your input pressure by turning the minireg down. As you up your dwell you can lower your input... otherwise you just have more air hitting the ball at the same pressure and will more than likely blow up more paint

Another night of blending
ok i took and reset the board
( even though I only had the loader settings and dwell bumped up one light)
Went down he cellar and tested the marker again
hand held chrono was about the same as the field chronos
+OR - 20 fps fluctuation between shots
and this thing was blending paint bad
(the paint was in my house all day @ 72 deg so it was not cold paint)
this time I had paint all up in the hopper, in the breech,
soup in the barrell and all,
cleaned out the marker and hopper and all,
then loaded another pod
shot really slow (about a 3 second pause between shots for this hopper) again..
smash crash soup, 1st break slop all over the bolt and ozzze sliding out the breach
cleaned that out..
cleaned the barrell repeat
slow fire
made more soup,
I am really at a loss, and have practice saturday at 4 pm.
i tried new batteries in the halo (even though the ones that were in it were about 4 days old)
I am thinking the velocity spikes may be doing this and smashing the paintballs ??
I had the local shop check the bolt adjustment the other night and they said it was perfect the way i had set it up with the light click,,,
I have a weird feeling the pressure variation in fps may be causing the issues
as there are 0 shells left in the breach
for some odd reason it just seems its just smashing the paintballs before they really enter the barrell ( just my non educated guess)
Eyes pass every time
and they are clean
thats the first thing i check and clean after we make soup
I am at a total loss
and honestly i cant play a tourney on the 19th with this mess
I will take it to the local shop again today let them see if they can sort it out
if not
Ken you will have a 05 speed on the way

Just for kicks, have you tried it with a different loader? I really think it has got to be an issue with the halo, at least for the chopping problem, the velocity inconsistancy is another thing all together. Lets solve one and then work out the other. I would bet cleaning the reg and or lpr would help out with the velocity issues.

I will take it to the local shop today
let them test a few different loaders
and since they have the proper tools let them clean the lpr and reg
and we will go from there

just wondering. how well were the paints kept? if it weren't kept well then it sure will deteriorate no matter how good the quality of the paints are. maybe it is:
1. the paint is too fragile
2. barrel to paint match
3. paint swollen, or bad batch of paints
4. barrel is dented
i don't know if too much air pressure or volume could cause a barrel break.

You should set your dwell to the highest setting (5 led's) increasing your dwell will make it easier on the paint....
Is it just me or almost everybody who is 'chopping' are either using a reloader B ...using crappy fragile paint....changed the dwell to something really low....or decided to lower their LPR pressure :notsure:

i'd say it's the paint too fragile for the reloader b. if you're using the 6-batt pack, try switching to 4-batt pack and see how it goes. lpr should be between 60 and 70 psi. depending on your paint, you can play around with your dwell. but it has been suggested to go with the default settings first.
i'm waiting for those guys with the evolve kit and from the MTs , esp. KEN, to share their findings.

it sounds like you need to just send it to a tech and get it over with
if ken is backed up, check out www.angelfaq.com his name is dan. i send all my stuff to him

Ok here is an update guys. I think the problem is with my infinity barrel. I got a good deal on a Stiffi 693 and WOW the gun rips. I fired off 200 rounds as fast as I could of the same batch of diablo that last week was breaking and NO breaks! I think the problem was with the ball to barrel match or that my barrel is messed up. Any idea on how to find out if the latter is the case?
Anyhow things seem better. Now I just need to get out and get the gun dirty again and see how she works.

I don`t know if this will help you but give it a try! I had the same problem with my master tech. I did the same thing you are describing and could not figure out what else to do.I was ready to send the angle back. Well I know the book tells you to "using ram tool rotate ram clockwise until slight resistence is felt in opening the breech block. If rotated too far the breech will not open so rotate counter-clockwise and repeat operation. The ram must always be rotated clockwise when setting." I did this just like the manual said. Then after every thing I tried I finally figured out that that the ram is going to far forward and breaking the more fragile paint. So I backed the RAM out a couple of turns and problem solved. I don`t know if the speeds are the same so if it is give it a try.....................

dalarocha, thanks for the advice, I'll check that aspect of the ram adjust too.
Went and shot sporting clays today, so I did not play this weekend. Hopefully will be able to play next weekend and I'll give everyone a followup.
