View Full Version : dwell
i have a force fly. my dwell is at 7 but when i turn it up the gun sounds totaly different. my gun works like a bat out of hell. why does my gun sound so much different when i go to 8 or higher. iam just wondering.

Because the dwell is set higher.

When you increase the dwell time you increase the amount of air that the marker uses. The more air that is used the louder the sound signature of the marker. You should hit an Angel with a dwell at 15ms and no paint.

it sounds like that becuase it similar to changing your velocity. except ur changing how fast the ram moves.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the dwell has no bearing over how fast the ram moves, rather the dwell is the time in which the ram stays completely extended against the valve. The forward and return stroke of the ram remain identical at 7ms - 18ms dwell, if anything the cycle time would decrease because the ram is staying fully extended for a longer period of time.
The noise variance is air related, no?

 ...Correcto-mundo! The increase in noise is caused by the increase in air volume escaping the valve/barrel by virtue of the valve being open longer by the increase in dwell time...
layman terms: higher dwell = longer valve open time = more air volume released = more noise...
..BUT, the dwell setting does affect cycle speed in that the lower the dwell, the faster and the higher the dwell the slower the cycle speed. This is related to how "long" the solenoid keeps the ram forward to open the valve before reversing and returning to closed position. Granted, it is in milliseconds, which many may not be able to discern, but it is still passage of time..
