View Full Version : - Trigger Design Deception -

Not really deception, but probably more of a HUGE coincidence. In May I talked with a well known trigger manufacturer who specializes in working with carbon fibre and bearings...I wont say any names...

The design that I gave him for a CF trigger, did not look like the SPEED5's trigger but more "resembled" the JD trigger and it incorporated the bearings, magnets, and doing away with the leaf spring in the exact manner that it was performed with the SPEED5's trigger.

Had I owned up to the $150.00 price tag for this one-off Fly trigger I would have some bragging rights now that WDP would have been following in my footsteps ... but alas ... being broke has once again scorn me to forever live in the shadow of those with vision and mad cash.

I dont doubt that the designers and engineers at WDP are very capable, but had I been cashy at the time I at least couldve beat them to the punch. :pat:

Cool idea on the trigger Syentific, but its no use crying over spilled milk. IMO even if you had the cash at the time, WDP would've still come out with the EMF trigger and bought you out for pennies on the dollar for property rights.

Actually WDP probably wouldve just made the trigger with no second thought as to whether or not I would oppose. I dont know how much you are aware of the process of claiming Intellelectual Property or infringements of said IP but if Smarts Parts couldnt beat WDP in court I dont know what makes anyone think that I may/may not have had any chance upholding my conceptions.

Besides, I wasnt trying to get rich of off the trigger idea. I just get sick of the leaf spring and trying to play with it to sharpen up the trigger feel and thought that moving the leaf to the trigger was a decent option to try out. Had it worked out that way I wouldve been happy to sell them, but dont get me wrong, I realize the futility in making a stink about it. Personally, if I could have my way, I would like to see micro switches back on the WDP guns.

More or less I just thought I would use this forum to rant and rave about things no one can help and thought maybe I would try to show everyone what a genius that I am ... just a genius with no money... :pointandl

Well I have to agree with you on the micro switch thing. My LED feels really crisp when I shoot it its just so darn heavy of a gun. I like the "feel" of microswitches; let's my fingers know when I pulled a trigger. However since the switch is optical wouldn't it never wear out like a microswitch would? (Correct me if I am wrong here) I tried out an 03 Speed a while back and couldn't get used to the feel of just firing the trigger without air; there's just no positive response feel to it. I hope the magnetic force on the 05 Speed makes the trigger "feel" crisper. Dang could anyone tell I like a short, crisp pull?!

I tuned a IR3 once that had a microswitch and it had like 160k on the board. I don't know how long it takes to wear out a microswitch, but I still think it would be worth it. :doc:

i've always thought about the reverse polarity magnetic triggers and had an idea about them.. if you take 2 magnets and put them together in a trigger.. the pull would be shorter but wouldnt this mean theres extra travel for the trigger? also wouldnt the travel foward cause a delay of the switch in moving foward as well?

in the end meaning that all of this stuff involving magnetic triggers doesn't really change the speed of trigger pulls?

i have yet to shoot a trigger that uses magnetic force for return, but to negate one of your issues, you would still use set screws to stop the forward/back travel of the trigger. The magnetic force is just to act in place of the spring.

The idea is to replace machanical force with something that doesnt invole as much friction...thats my opinion anyway.

so wouldnt it be better to rely on springs because dont magnets that are often close to each other wear out much faster?

but i guess that isn't an issue for people who don't mind it because they upgrade their gun every month :P

I have heard this before, and think that there may be an element of truth to the statement. But with regards to ball bearings and triggers...I think not. :hi:

I must say though, (and this is all I can say now) that this new speed has REALLY caught my interest.

WDP is an excellent company - but they are plenty fallable.

Remember:

The yellow Key on the LCD?
The Detent Covers on the 04 Speed that guranteed you to strip the piss out of them?
The Fried Boards of the LCD?

They have great ideas - but this does not preclude others from having them.

sorry to burst your bubble but russ had the idea about 2 years ago and designed and used it.we were going to implement it but wdp was planning on using it for the 05 speed so we didnt .and now you know the rest of the story.

Exactly my point.

WDP is great - but others Russ, Ken, Sean, Technatrigger etc have great ideas too.

True everybody has the ability to think up great ideas. It's just when I think of a great one I don't have the mounds of pounds that WDP has access to. Good ideas are those that see fruition thanks to cash.
