You do know that if you're not registered within a certain time period before the election you will be unable to vote in this years Presidential Election correct? There is nothing stopping you from registering now, and it only takes a few minutes to do so.

Your vote is not "wasted" if you vote in the person who you believe that can best do the job. Nadars chances of winning are slim to none, but if that's who you think can do the job the vote for him.

Okay sorry. I hate the people that say if "so and so wins blah blah". If you're old enough to vote then make sure you do so that you can't say "if I'd voted maybe he would've won" or something along those lines. Voting is power, it's your way of telling the gov't who you want to run the country. There are people serving their country everyday to defend and protect these freedoms don't give them up and don't make them feel useless by running away from issues. Show them that what they are doing everyday means something to Joe Schmoe Public. VOTE!!!

I can only assume that you just finished a U.S. Government class.

Yes, the electoral college votes, but that vote is done by delegates who have sworn allegiance to their party, and nothing short of the death of their candidate is likely to make them vote for anyone but their party's nominee. And how do we know which delegates to send? It's based on who wins the popular vote in each state. [With the exception of a few states that prorate delegates on the basis of the popular vote.]

All of our votes count, and, in fact, the degree to which individual votes count is amplified by the fact that the electoral college works the way it does, even as votes in aggregate become less meaningful (as in our last election, where we put Dubya in office but didn't elect him by a couple percentage points).

The amazing thing is that, in Virginia, for the first time in over fifty years, we have a chance of electing a Democrat for president. Many polls put the race within 3% here in the Old Dominion, and if Bush loses Virginia, he probably won't be able to recover, in terms of electoral votes. So the unfairness of the electoral college system swings both ways.

It's kind of been already touched upon however I would like to point out that yes in fact your vote does count. The Electoral college gives it's votes to the President based upon who wins the Popular vote in said state. You'll notice that this is why they refer to the President as "winning a state" because he has secured 51% of the popular vote in said state therefore he gets that states Electoral votes. There are also 2 actual voting dates. The Popular vote where everyone goes out and votes and then a couple of months later the Electoral vote where the Electoral College officially casts their ballots for the new President. There has only been a few times in the history of this country where a States Electoral votes have been split. So yes, your vote does count, and it counts very much.

If you took my words as a personal attack I too would like to take the opportunity to apologize. As a voting citizen, and a former member of the military I take voting and citizenship very seriously. If you feel that the country would be such a bad place to live based upon 1 person in charge that you have to leave then my personal feelings on it are plainly stated above. However as you stated you're only trying to get a point across. Well there is a better way...VOTE! Not only can you vote but you can campaign for the person whom you feel should be in this office. Ohio is leaning Bush (http://www.performanceangel.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=51&cat=60&page=1); be a Nader Trader. Vote for Bush or Kerry, and let someone else vote for Nader in a state where it doesn't matter. Regardless of for whom you're voting in this election, throwing away your vote in a battleground state is rarely a good idea.

Jouster

P.S. PLEASE NOTE that I am not saying that voting for Nader is pointless; merely that, since he won't win, it's best to vote "for real" in battleground states and compensate by voting "extra" for Nader in states that aren't contested.

The problem is the current voting system. A Borda count or an approval-based system would be a far more accurate representation of the peoples' wishes.

But, obviously, neither major party has any interest in promoting a system which would reduce their own power, so we'll never see such a change. So, basically, cynical as it may sound, the best choice is to support what's viable, rather than what we would have if we could make over the whole thing from scratch.

Its this train of thought that keeps the third parties out of the picture.

Alot of people want to see a third party canidate in office, but feel it is a pipe dream, so they instead vote for what is the "lesser" of two evils..

I say Bush, or Kerry are the same P O S, just one is greenish brown, and the other a dark Brown, but they both still smell like ☼☼☼☼ to me. :D

Smaller GOV all the way! If we replaced alot of these gov ran programs with private owned/funded companys (Like SS) Then the co. would have no choice, but to make money, and be as ligit as possable, else they would loose there buiz to the next private company. Instead of having us by the balls, and we get what it is they want to give "." .

I mean, look at the IRS, they are a bunch of nazis. They answer to NOONE.

And schools.. OMG, what a Joke. Instead of american's blindly handing over 1/3 (just shy) of there earnings each year, and letting the gov piss it away where ever they want, we should be able to select the GOV ran programs our money goes into. And more people would choose to put there money into the schools, and the roads, and NOT into finding out what is making american's fat, or how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop , or why young people like to spike there hair.

ANyways I could go on, but I really am not that into politics, and cant provide enough "fact" based info, and websites/media coverage to bother.

To Who?, just so you know more and more gov. jobs are going to private companies as far as the military is concerned. Pretty much they have scaled it back to the only jobs that aren't civilian already or going civilian are the ones that require high securaty clearance or the companies would loose money on due to all the overtime they would have to pay in overtime because of the hours we work. Which is good because your right, the companies do have to provide good service or there is another one just waiting for the contract. But at the same time, the bad side is its really easy for these companies to scam the goverment out of millions of dollars, which in turn means thats your money that was stolen. Now, each year there is millions of dollars recovered by our internal agency due to this, but not every stolen dollar get recovered. Look at what happened recently with Halibrant, the goverment has been doing business with that company for decades and we just now found out they have been frauding the goverment. Care to guess how many other times they have frauded the goverment and weren't caught? I guess what I'm trying to say is private companies are good, but its just as easy to loose money with them also.

Now I also agree that the gov. waste money on some really stupid stuff, but if we got to choose were every tax dollar we pay goes, then more than likely your going to choose the ones that effect you directly like schools and roads. But what about all the other ones you contribute to like welfare and WIC, or medical research, that may not directly effect you but still need your tax dollars to survive. Which means alot of goverment funded programs would probly fold because the only people paying into them are the people who need or are effected by them. Thats why we have elected officials who decide were the money goes. If you dont like how that person chose to spend your money, dont vote on them again. Anyways, just my 2 cents.

I agree with alot of what you said, You are very right, private co's can be jsut as crooked. however, when they are caught they pay for what they have done. It is not just swept under the rug, and forgotten about.

Also, I disagree with welfare. People are bigger and better than you may think (not tryin to sound condisending, so please take no offence) (IMO). If there wasnt a crutch like welfare, for people to abuse, I mean use (sorry couldnt resist), then someone would run a private "welfare" program (like how they have those programs for needy children over seas, and so forth), that maybe the gov could donate to, maybe even match whatever they are able to raise for funds. I mean, really. The gov does not fund people for cats, or people for Dobie's, and people for pitbulls, and people for every other breed there is out there of dog, plus they have all sorts of programs for hurt wild animals, and so forth.
So what I am trying to say is, if the gov was to cut these programs (like welfare), then someone else would pick them up. I would have a really hard time believing that we as a country would let our fellow citizens starve, and be deprived. I know I for one would absolutly donate to it. But I feel welfare is grossly abused, and I feel that the gov does not run the program well AT ALL.

Wic, I have no real comment on, I will leave wic alone, I do not know much about it, and would only be assuming things. However I would bet dimes to dollars it isnt much better than welfare.

The way I look at it, if not enough people would choose certain programs for part of where the 1/3 of thier pay should go, then the program should NOT be around. I am not implying that taxes are even to high (who wouldnt like to see them lower, but I also enjoy being a powerfull nation, with all the perks that go with being a rich nation, so I understand why taxes are a bit high) I just think we should have control over OUR money, and where it goes, because remember it is STILL ours. Not the gov's. Also this would keep the gov ran programs some what honist, and force them to advertise what they are trying to do with our money, so they continue to get funding.

How much granularity and transparency do you want? If it's on a per-project basis, not only is that overwhelming, but I have no clue whether I should support "M-272 Tactical Machine Gun" or "M1A3 Upgraded Main Battle Tank". And if it's on a department level, how do I know what percentage of my dollars each one properly deserves? I mean, Health and Human Services is great and all, and so is the Department of Defense, but shouldn't FEMA get at least 10%? And so on...

And what happens when war breaks out? Obviously, the DoD now needs more money, but I didn't know that when last I selected who received my money. Do we hold a special election to re-select where our dollars go? Who chooses what programs get cut and which get saved as a result of these budget cuts in other departments? And if not war, what other emergencies qualify for such an emergency election? Terror strikes mean extra funding for FEMA? Bankruptcy of a large corporation translate into extra unemployment benefit and jobfinding services moneys?

And finally, how much, in percentage terms, of the money going into each of these programs is now being wasted on advertising how useful they are? Instead of plodding along, doing a great job, FEMA now has to spend tens of billions of dollars a year on PR? No thanks.

I elect people to choose where my money goes, and that's a full-time job for them. I wouldn't think of trivializing their effort by suggesting I can do better via a day's research and a bunch of TV ads run by the agencies vying for my funding.

Who, I can see some of your point, but I agree with Jouster and what I said earlier. Nice thing is this is a free country and we can both have are differance of opinions. And something else on the private co. that I forgot to mention. You are right in that when they get caught they pay for their mistakes. But alot of the time its easier and more cost effective to still keep that company that has already frauded money out of the goverment in their contract. This is due to you figure they already have the people and equipment in place for the job they are doing. And alot of the times with what I deal with as an aircraft mechanic is Co. A has the specialized equipment to make part xyz for the aircraft, tank, truck, etc. and if you pull them out then yes, the goverment owns the patent and design of that part. But how long is it going to take Co. B to move in and start making this part? And alot of the times the tools used to make that part are made just to make that one part. And the goverment doesn't get the ownership right to the support equipment most of the time. So your looking at having aircraft or other equipment down for extreme amounts of time while Co. B designs and builds the euipment, then has to learn how to make part xyz. So to make a long story short, most of the time the goverment will give the company a slap on the wrist and a fine, but the company is still operating on their contract. So what about the next time they do it and don't get caught. Its real easy to say just get rid of them and let the next guy come in and do the job until you start really looking at what its going to cost in the long run.

Who?
08-20-2004, 03:59 PM
I see both of your points, very well said I might add.

I am not saying that people should run elections for where there dollars go, or pick a "gun" to donate to, or "tank". That would with out a doubt not work. I still feel I should have more control over my money. My local schools are still using the same outdated books that where there when I was a kid. And when I had them they had names in them from 1980. Yet mean while DPW just got all new trucks, and cat 416 backhoes, and they leave them on the side of the road for two weeks at a time going to waste.. :?

I will not pretend to have the answers, or act like i really know what im talking about, because i really dont.

What I do know if that I give about 10,000 a year in taxes, and I bet about 7 grand is pissed away on stupid needless crap. Yet when I go into boston, it breaks my heart, because I am seeing homeless a mother with her children sleeping inside a box (roxberry, right near the Goodwill industries), with a old peice of tarp as a roof. :/ But then the Gov goes ahead, and sends a endless amount of money over sea's to help rebuild something we had to blow up. :/ Im not saying I have the answer for this either, but it still bothers me to see.

I do know that realisticly what I said will never work. Not enough people would educate themselves enough to know where to put their money, or what programs are what, and so forth. So I do know that it is just a pipe dream.

I vote every year. And every year, I am disapointed. noone I vote for ever gets into office :( Maybe one day.

I respect you both, and your opinions. You both state them very well. More people should learn to talk politics like you two. Kudo's :)

well im proud to say i am now a registered voter (first time) and bush is definitely getting my vote... when it comes down to it... in times like these there should only be one question on ur mindwhen u step into the voting booth... who will do a better job protecting this country? i mean i have heard countless people say they are voting for kerry...and when asked the reason why...the number one thing i hear is "cuz he's not bush", which needless to say is dumb... and another thing... if u ask people if they think kerry will seriously do a better job in office, rarely do u get a "YES!" u usally get..."i think so" or "i suppose" which to me sounds like doubt...and u shouldnt be voting for someone who fills ur mind with doubt. he's the biggest flip flopper ive ever herd...has NO stand on any issues... he's the typical brown noser that agrees with anything u say... even if it means it contradicts wat he said before..."i voted for the war...before i voted against it" i mean wat the heck?!?!? thats the guy u want in office?

well im proud to say i am now a registered voter (first time) and bush is definitely getting my vote... when it comes down to it... in times like these there should only be one question on ur mindwhen u step into the voting booth... who will do a better job protecting this country? i mean i have heard countless people say they are voting for kerry...and when asked the reason why...the number one thing i hear is "cuz he's not bush", which needless to say is dumb... and another thing... if u ask people if they think kerry will seriously do a better job in office, rarely do u get a "YES!" u usally get..."i think so" or "i suppose" which to me sounds like doubt...and u shouldnt be voting for someone who fills ur mind with doubt. he's the biggest flip flopper ive ever herd...has NO stand on any issues... he's the typical brown noser that agrees with anything u say... even if it means it contradicts wat he said before..."i voted for the war...before i voted against it" i mean wat the heck?!?!? thats the guy u want in office?

PS sorry to bring back a slowly dyin thread...i was just excited bout being registered to vote for the first time
It's good that you've registered to vote. Please keep that registration current, and vote in all city, state, and off-year federal elections, not just Presidential ones.

My main argument that Kerry would keep us safer relates to how Bush has handled the war in Iraq. By going in with too few troops, dissolving the Iraqi army, placing puppets in positions of power, etc., he has sacrificed any thanks the Iraqis may once have given us in return for an enmity that is fast spreading to other nations. Bush has created many times more terrorists than he has killed.

I cannot help but think that someone who understands that there are nuances to some issues that require periodic reevaluation of the right course of action--what you so crassly call a "flip-flopper"--is the right person for the job. How much better off would we be if Bush had reevaluated his plans for war in the face of new intelligence (or U.N. inspectors) that showed Iraq was pursuing neither nuclear, chemical, nor biological weapons programs? Not flip-flopping has bad consequences, too, like sitting in a Florida classroom reading from a book for a full seven minutes after he knew about the attacks on the WTC. Maybe it was time to get up and leave? "But I had committed to sitting here and reading this book! They'll think I'm a pansy if I back out now!"

Sometimes the biggest bully on the playground is also the dumbest.

wellin response to him stayin in the class to read...i feel it was a reasonable action to not cause panic, and finish the book so the kids and the people at the school dont think...uh oh...he's leaving early... whats wrong? also if u wanna attack bush on delayin action while readin a book to children...how about kerry...he claims that when the first tower got hit...he couldnt think....then before ya kno it the second tower got hit... thats aorund 40 minutes in between... so he's pretty much tellin us that for 40 minutes he sat there dumbfounded? kerry even said himself he felt iraq was a threat and wmd's were likely...and now he's blasting bush for actually takin action and doing something about it...so wat... bush seemed to have enough supporters to implement going into iraq...so why not blame them while your at it?

on another slightly relevant note... i was driving to brooklyn the other day and on one of the columns holding up the expressway i saw graffiti saying "OSAMA VOTES KERRY" i thought id share that as a joke lol

Kerry supported Bush's war because the intel he saw was what Bush was feeding him. Bush was responsible for intel, Congress was responsible for the decision on whether to go to war. Since the latter relied upon the former, when the decision is flawed, it's time to look at why they made that decision. The answer is that Bush was aggressively pushing to ensure that every word out of the CIA's mouth included "Saddam", "WMD", and "has" or "is actively developing".

Futhermore, regardless of whether or not attacking Iraq was the right thing to do, it was handled with such poor grace by the Bush administration that it somehow managed to free an oppressed, starving group of people led by a maniac dictator, throw in billions of dollars of aid to get the country back on its feet, and still garner murderous hate in the heart of, at the very least, a significant minority of Iraqis. Now that takes some skill, or, more accurately, lack thereof.

bush gets my vote!!!

You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner,
locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges. You are carrying a Glock .40, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds
before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?

Democrat's Answer:

Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!

Does the man look poor or oppressed?

Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?

Could we run away?

What does my wife think?

What about the kids?

Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?

What does the law say about this situation?

Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it?

Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children?

Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?

Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?

If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?

Should I call 9-1-1?

Why is this street so deserted?

We need to raise taxes, have a painting and weeding day and make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.

This is all so confusing!

I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus.
