View Full Version : Before you put that volumizer on...

I assume now that you should NOT tighten the volumizer down. Also be sure to use some lube or anti-seize on the threads.

I had a unfortunate experience with my brand new speed. When I screwed in my WDP volumizer I gently tightened it by hand. Not real tight at all mind you, just a little snug to keep it from unscrewing. That is when I found that my volumizer was stuck and would not come off! I had to use the old cloth and vice trick to remove it, tearing the threads completely off the volumizer and damaging the threads in the gun body! It took a while to get it back from the master techs and I missed 2 weekends of play.

I looked in the manual and I didn't see any warnings that this may happen. The volumizers don't come with any instructions indicating you should lube the threads and not tighten them as you would tighten anything else you screw in to your marker. Did I miss something???

Just an FYI for all you new owners out there. I don't want anyone else to mess up thier new speed.

it sounds like you cross threaded it...a common problem with the small threading they use on the volumizers...be very careful!!!

Shame this happened to you. I have a volumizer on my Dark LCD and I don't lube it up or anything, but I am careful due to the very small threading. At least you got it fixed.

Yeah and 2 weekends of play isn't that long atleast it was pretty quick...

I was actually very carefull not to crosstread it as I put it on. It went on very easily and with no resistance. I turned the volumizer in the unscrew direction for several turns to feel the "click" of where the threading begins, then I began screwing it in with the threads hopefully aligned and the volumizer going in nice and straight. With my other hobbies and vocations I have had the displeasure of crossthreading many a screw in the past. I want to say there is no way I cross threaded it since I felt I was being overly cautious, but anything is possible. I think perhaps, if I screwed it in too far, the volumizer was being screwed in past the threads in the body, thus providing the tightening feeling and messing up the threads on the volumizer at the same time.

Should I be worried that my new volumizer is loose? It turns easily in each direction as I am not inclined to tighten it again. I left it loose about 1/2 turn from where I could just begin to feel it tighten.

Thanks

not really....there is an o-ring on it so it will prevent you from leaking, you should be just fine.

I really hate to ask this but the gun was completly degassed right? I had a similar problem due to making that mistake.

Thanks guys!

cross threading is when you're threading two things together (screwing something into something else) and you don't have the threads aligned correctly. the ridge of one isn't aligned properly with the groove of the other so the first ridge will end up cutting into the ridges of the other, ruining the threads on one or both pieces.

tightened both of mine on with a strap wrench. didn't go crazy, but they are on there fine. due to the oring being ahead of the threads, it is very possible to miss seat the threads, as the ring will provide a small amount of resistence, thus forcing you to have to push in a little to get the threads to meet. but if you were cross threading it, there is no way it would have gone is all the way, no problem. perhaps a few rotations, but eventually the threads would have bitten and you would have felt it for sure when tightenting by hand. your threading issue is really weird. i say give the volumizer the finger and hope all is well.

Mine worked with no problems when I hand threaded it on. Sucks that yours got crossthreaded.
