View Full Version : How hard should it be to close the breech?

I just tried tuning my ir3 for the first time by myself and so i set the ram stroke, but i think i may have had it too far forward because i chopped from shooting too fast (im running an egg2 with z board so its not the hopper). I have it so it clicks when it closes but its more than just "slight resistance" to open and close the breech; its actually pretty stiff. So im just wondering, how hard should the resistance be when you set the ram stroke?

Chopping may also have been due to me not setting cops up right but im pretty sure its the ram.

Hmm, one more thing, the snap ring adjustment is just that screw at the back of the ram, right? ...because thats what i adjusted. thx.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I got my A4 bolt a while ago but there weren't any fields open until today...so the reason i re-tuned my ir3 was because of the new bolt. But something wierd happened: when i degassed and fired off the remaining air the hammer&bolt would get stuck forward forcing me to push it back into the correct position. I searched a found a thread with this same problem and it seems this is normal since the marker wont have enough air to return the hammer but i never ever had this problem using the stock bolt...hmm so yeah, is there some reason why this never happened with the stock bolt but happened with the A4 bolt?

it does sound like your ram stroke is too far forward, it only needs to be a slight click.

So not too light that its almost effortless to open up the breech, but hard enough that it takes some force to open? The manual also says to adjust it according to the click it makes when opening the breech, not closing it...is that right?

That would be correct.

What you're looking for is that slight click when you close the breech. Ken did an outstanding job of describing this in the technical reference section.

Ken's advice: have it click on the rear of the hammer.

Your snap ring might also be slightly too tight if the ram isn't coming all the way back after you adjust the stroke. you shouldn't have to force the breach open or closed but it should make the click when you close it. forcing it will mean something will have to flex to close it and may end up the bolt is too far forward once it is closed to be able to open it again.

The hammer wasnt coming back because i degassed my gun and when i fired off the remaining air there wasnt enough to push the hammer back on the last shot. I have adjusted my ram such that it clicks and has a little resistance when opening/closing. Im going out to the field again tomorrow so if more problems arrise and no one can help me there i will post here. Hopefully i have this whole ram adjustment thing down...
