As most of you know, I go out to sea so I'm not on the boards all of the time. The last trip I made was a month long and we did a ROV survey during the day and Long Line survey durin the night. We started at Morehead City, NC and worked down south to Vero Beach, FL. Here are some pics of what we did starting with the ROV and pics it took. Enjoy.
The pics are prety big, the scientist took them and I don't have time to resize them.

OK, I just got back from a deep water trip, here are partial cruise instructions for a little back ground on it:
Objectives: The primary objective is to collect fish, cephalopod, and crustacean specimens from the bottom and midwaters at depths of 1000 - 2000 m. These collections will be used for tissue samples, photographs of freshly collected specimens and systematic characters, and voucher specimens in museum collections at the National Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Comparative Zoology. Additionally, an observer from Protected Resources Branch will document observations of marine mammals, turtles and seabirds during daytime hours. These collections and observations contribute to Ocean Exploration and Census of Marine Life projects. Additionally, the cruise will provide educational experience in deep-sea biology to students from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary.
I'll be posting some pics in a minute. They aren't as cool as the other ones, but interesting. We found 2 potential new species this trip. They just need to be exmained better at the lab along with some DNA testing.

This is some of the risk involved when you set out 4000 meters of wire. There are too many bad things that can happen like the doors crossing. It took us about 2 hours to uncross and untwist the net, add a few more hours on top of that for net repairs and it's a long day.

Do you ever do any other type of work with the ROV. IE offshore platform inspections etc. We had a mini submarine that took a man down to perform an inspection on one of our platforms. Just curious if you have ever done this.
Chad
Vantage_TeS
06-15-2004, 08:52 PM
The ROV is a Remotely Operated Vehicle, which means that you don't have people in/on it. A minisub is different.
Also the type of work they do is ocean research so they would get shot if they used it for commercial purposes.

Hehe it was an educated guess on the topic of you being associated with a goverment branch of ocean research and the topic of inspecting oil platforms. I am thinking that it would never happen. Then again anything is possible.

I should have been more clear, my apologies. I have worked in the past with several companies that utilize ROV's and mini subs to obtain data in the Gulf of Mexico. This data is typically for the MMS with regard to the condition of our deep water platforms. I was just curious if Thog has done that type of work. Obviously what he does is extremely interesting and the pictures are stunning.

Here's 2 pics of a chimera. They say it's the missing link between sharks and swordfish. It's bill is all cartilage like a shark, but has the properties of a fish. These are really rare to find, guess we got lucky. Most of the scientist didn't know what they were, the ones that did wet their pants. We called them the "spy vs spy" fish cause they look like them from Mad Magazine.

He needed a bunch of shots since there is all kinds of stuff on the hook, we use either dog fish or mackerel for bait. OK, well I haven't updated this thread in a while. There are a few reasons for that, but I have a few new pics and am waiting on some good ones from different people. For now here are a few. This is a bigger version of the coffin that I had posted earlier. Inside are some live herring and a few that are not so alive lol
We were doing a herring acoustic survey from the beginning of Sept to the middle of Oct. Pretty boring stuff.
thog94
11-05-2004, 12:05 AM
Here are a few pics of some sea life and a falcon that was following us for a few days. There are dolphins just hanging out and pilot whales that were bagg feeding. They are pretty smart and eating the fish that were coming out of the cod end (which is the technical term for the end of the net). I can remember a few times in the past where they actually opened the cod end which is tied by line and the scientist lost the entire catch. There's a pic of our new cook, he didn't work out that well so we boiled him and ate him. He tasted much better than he could cook.
thog94
11-05-2004, 12:10 AM
Here's a few pics of a pretty big herring tox. The bag is on deck and I asked the scientist if they wanted to dump it on deck or in the checker (the checker is the wooden bin in pic#2 were all the catches go to get sorted out). The decided to dump it in the checker. Well the checker holds about 1 ton of fish. The second pic is of all the herring all over the place. When the guys popped the cod end it was a giant wave of blue going everywhere. When all was said and done, they estimated over 3 tons of fish were caught. All they ever look for in a herring sample is about 2-3 hunderd pounds lol

11-05-2004, 12:18 AM
OK, last trip we were testing a new net that fisheries wants to use. After being out for a week we got most of the data that they were looking for. Some of the data they needed was what the new net catches vs the old net. Well our sister ship the Albatross 4 was out on a survey and we joined them for 3 days. We would tow side by side within a 1/4 mile and compare catches. She was on the 4th leg of the survey and had ruined 3 nets. The Gulf of Maine and Northern George's Banks can be real hard on gear. In order for he to finish the survey, we transfered a net to her at sea.
What happens is we get real close (within a 100 feet) and the toss us a heaving line. We then tie the hearing line to the wings of the net(the front of the net), and the A4 gently pulls the net. The net gets transfered from our back deck to them in a matter of a minute or so. It's a fairly damgerous operation, but both times that I've done it, it went smooth.

Here is the transfer being completed

Ok, this is one of the projects that we are doing on this current trip. We are in now for the weekend due to bad weather, thus giving me a chance to post this. THis contraption is called a Seaboo. It has a few cameras on it, 2 looking down and 2 looking forward. Everything is in color and in real time. If you look at the last pic, this is what the scientist are looking at when we deploy it. Unlike the last underwater camera stuff we did, I've worked with these guys for a while and the are a good bunch of people. The Seaboss also has a grabber. When they find a nice place to set it down, they release the spring and it scoops up a chunk of the bottom. The scientist take a few samples and study the sediment that they catch along with any tube worms or living creatures that are in there. It works well unless the catch a clam, scallop, or rock which prevents the grabber from closing all the way. If this happens we launch it and try it again.

OK, this is it for the night, but it's also where I get to have some fun. These are a few pics of scientist and crew.
The 1st pics is of a former crew member as of today. He got smart and left before I could fire him. Anyway he's one headache that none of us have to deal with ever again. Last I heard he was headed back to Home Depot where he belongs. How does a 35 year old man still live with mom and dad?
In pic #2 there are 2 scientist. I don't know the guys name and don't really care, but the girls name is Lisa. We actually don't call her that, she's know to us as "The Stalker". She attaches herself to you like a leech and won't leave you alone. My poor buddy Pete was hounded by her for months. She would constantly e-mail him and come over to visit him whenever the ship was in. It's a long story and don't have time to explain, but she's a sad case(can anyone say psycho).
In pic#3 is my buddy Grady. He's one of our engineers and he's fixing some fittings on the trawl winch. Grady is a great guy and takes a ton of crap from all of us, but he's one of the nicest kind hearted guys that you'll ever meet. He's also never met a meal he didn't like! Can't help that cheap shot but that's all we do at work anyway.
The last pic is of me and Jon, or better know as Joanna. Everyone gets a nickname when the get on. I also call him several other names that he answers to without hesitation, we even have the captain calling him Joanna. I'm on the left running the winch and he's flexing or trying to anyway. Joanna is my whipping boy, lord knows that every work place needs one. There's not one thing that he says that we don't make fun of him about. His good nature just laughs it off and he knows that we aren't serious about it. It's good to have someone like him around, he makes my job easier and he's a hell of a good worker. I'm in the process of trainig him to move up the ladder. This pic also shows you how well the guys on the boat know me by putting in the caption.
Well until later this trip or whenever I pull some more pics from the boat, this is it for a while.

Nope not a scientist, just work with them. I'm actually the Chief Bosun. I'm in charge of all deck operations and stuff like that.

OK, I haven't posted any pics in a while because I haven't felt like it. There also haven't been any pics that I really liked. Anyway here are some more pics of the deep water fish.
Pics are HUGE, the scientist took them at this size and I'm not going to resize all of them.
We'll start off with different squid...

Where's the pics of the Marlin or the Mahi Mahi? A good fishing trip seems a bit more fun than looking at all that scientific stuff, especially when you are getting paid to go fishing.

This trip was a little different for us, we did some mooring work. The 3 moorings we did are weather stations to help provide information for the at sea community. One of the mooring was way off shore and 2 were close by. Here is the web page of the group of guys we had out with us: http://gyre.umeoce.maine.edu/gomoos.php
Here are some pictures of the onload and how full the deck was...

Here is the buoy being deployed...
We had 6 tag lines on it along with 2 slip hooks to release it as soon as it hits the weather. We needed to get it up and over the rail and pass some sensors through the open frames.
thog94
05-02-2005, 08:00 PM
Some line went out with more sensors, then finally the anchor...

Here are pics of a buoy recovery. We take it down the port side and hook into it with clips on slings that are attached to poles to reach the buoys. After we hook in, we get it close with the crane then attach a few tag lines and bring her on deck. You can also see a few sensors that are just below the buoy.
Everything comes onboard including the anchor. The acoustic releases that are use on some buoys cost 12k each so it's cheaper to do it this way. The buoys with no release have anchors that weigh 2700 lbs and the one with releases weigh 3700 lbs. They use old railroad wheels as anchors.

Well it's clamming time. We spent the better part of 3 weeks setting up clam gear. This includes the extensive electronic pacage on the clam dredge. Here are a few pics of the onload. It's like a giant jungle gym. Here are a few pics of us taking the trawl door off.

After the lower ramp is secured, the sorting table is put on. I don't have any pics of that, but the upper ramp and goal post get put on after the table.

I don't know why some of the pics ended up out of order, I'll have some more when I get back in a couple of weeks. Maybe i'll take some of the damage that we do to the dredge when we hit rocky bottom.

Just got back from a 19 day trip. We were looking for pilot whales. When we found them we would launch a few boats to they can photo ID and take biopsy samples from them for DNA purposes. Here are a few pics of the gray boat being launched.

Here are a few pics of a dead whale we found, I think it was a Humpback. Dead whales really smell bad, actually any marine mammal is rank. There is also a pic of a dolphin jumping out of the water along with some water spouts that were in the distance.

This pic was taken about a month ago when we were still clamming. It was taken by a teacher who came on as a scientist. NOAA has a program called Teacher At Sea. It's pretty coll because teaches from all over the country can apply and come out on different ships to see how life at sea is and how the scientist collect samples. The pic is a panoramic view of Woods Hole, our home port. The picture was taken from the "finger pier", we are docked at the cement pier, you can also see the lab in the background.

A giant sea turtle washed up here once. Man what a smell. I'll see if I can find it again but there was an amusing video I saw once of a dead whale that washed up on a beach and the -attempt- of the local authority to try to make it go away =D

I think I know the one you are talking about except the one I am thinking of was a whole whale and the problem did not go away as planned but merely got spread out over a larger area.

Ah yes, seen that one, talk about a mess. I saw a dead whale floating around on my last month of deployment. Didn't get close enough to smell it, but you could see the birds enjoying the buffet, just like the first pic.

Well our XO is now leaving for another job, two words can describe him GOOD RIDDANCE! Anyone that has dealt with XO's know that they need to be the "bad cop" but this XO enjoyed being a dick and relished in it. His last trip he went out with a bang even pissing off the CO, so we paid tribute to him in these pics, we even wore the shirts upon arrival.

How about this for a paint job on the door going up to the bridge...
The door got jammed closed so we had to pop the hinges and jimmy the bastard around, chipping some paint in the process. Jon got a little creative with the paint job.
Shiver me timbers!!
BTW TK did you get that package yet?

Here are some pics of a whale carcas that I found last trip. We were just steaming along and something looked funny in the distance. Upon further review, it was an unidentified dead whale. We took a few pics and reported it back to the lab. There were a few sharks still underneath feeding on it. Some of the bite marks around the jaw were also pretty impressive. The worst thing is that it stank like crap, but all dead marine mammals do, being up wind was nice.
