Just wondering if anyone out there has an external DVD burner and how happy you are with it. I've been looking at a few and am undecided. I don't really feel like getting an internal one, I hate dealing with opening the comp and swapping stuff out. Besides I can take an external one back and forth to work, just incase any of you were wondering why I want an external one. Any input would be appreciated.

Not entirely sure if they make external drives, but Plextor and Asus seem to be some of the most efficent and reliable burners out there.

Thanks Icehawk. Plextor does make an external, one that I was looking at. Asus just has internal drives.

externals are only going to burn at 2x at most unless you have usb 2.0 .... if you dont have a usb 2.0 card looks like you're going to be swapping parts anyway. Other than that if you read cnet and places like that you can always find a ton of review.s

Been looking at cnet and pcworld along with a few others. Looked into the USB card and I'm good to go. Thanks Matt

externals have some issues other than usb 2.0 and bandwidth problems. They also need a pretty beefy computer to run on otherwise i heard they don't burn sometimes or a little slower than the max they advertise. That's a problem the topend burners that came out 6 months ago don't really have anymore. Afterdawn.com is a good forum to look at stuff on dvd burning and see what people suggest and what problems they run into. Dvdrhelp.com will also help. I haven't looked in awhile but good luck.
If you have any more question i have like 50 links you can look at.
Don't look at cnet and general sites as they are ok sites and good for general info.
Plextor and Pioneer are forefront on dvd burners.
one more thing, media is very important so don't skimp and just buy the good stuff s you don't get coaster and in the end cost the same as the good stuff.
