you need a cradle or a cable or something to connect them,

check it's manual to know how to do that

I got the cord and hooked it up right but, it said something about hotsync? and I cannot get it to connect for some reason.

for that support I suggest you contact palm.com or whatever company made your palm pilot. this is not the forum for hotsync questions.

you need to enable the hotsync on the pc and then tell the palm to hotsync with the pc

check it's manual... or the website, like previously suggested

You need to load the Palm Desktop software (I believe it's 4.0 or 4.1 now) to your PC. An icon that looks like red and blue arrows forming a circle will appear in your system tray next to your clock. Right click on it, select each item in it and adjust accordingly (like your type of connection, whether USB or Serial, and what you want to overwrite what).
This Desktop is also where you'll select Install and point to the downloaded Pro file on your harddrive. The next time you HotSync, it will automatically install the software onto your Palm.
If your wired connection to the PC is by cable, you'll need to get the Hotsync started by selecting it on your Palm. If you have a cradle, there should be a button on the front to Hot sync.
If the hotsync doesn't launch a little popup window on your PC, adjust your COM port by going to that system tray icon, right click, Setup, Local.

Lots of other things can go wrong, see if that helps. Palm has an okay manual but weak support site - I'd use the Palm forums dedicated to PDA's for help.
