Indeed, they've made an aluminum cover that sits even more flush to the body of the marker, housing the detent, spring and eye cover.

What's the rest of that black rubber looking part going down into the grip frame?

That covers the wires to the eyes that are under that same cover.

How deep is the groove cut into the body for the wires?

i dont think there is a grove

Yeah, no groove. Most likely the wires have a channel inside of that black rubber cover.
