I am trying to complete my barrel set. I was looking at buying a dye-ultra light. Does an ultra light have the step bore?
I understand that the step bore should increase air efficiency by eliminating friction after the balls initial acceleration. Is the step bores increased efficiency noticeable, or is it a marketing ploy?
If the step bore is noticeable, any suggestions on barrels that have it-
Boom Stick
CP 2 piece
Powerlyte

yes, Ultralites have a step in them. And the newer ones are two peices so you can screw them apart. As far as efficiency goes... I've herd different cases. Some say single peice barrels are more efficient because there is a longer control bore to accelerate the ball however the gas escapes through the portings so its acutally slowing down the ball. On the other hand, only 6" touch teh ball on a stepped barrel so nothing slowing teh ball down after that right? Well thats not all that true. Though the tip is a larger bore and is not supposed to touch the ball, i beleive it still does because it does go through the exact center.
The tip Powerlyte devoloped is sort of unique. The tip isn't completely ported. The beginning stage of the tip is unported because there is still slight gas behind the ball which can be used teh accelerate the ball rather than go to waste right away like on Boomsticks and Freaks. But ususally small things like these don't make too much of a difference. You won't be saving that much gas so you can acutally get a useful amount of extra shots so i wouldn't really worry about it. If you really are an gas efficiency freak, go with a set of Lapco barrels or BOA.

Thanks for the info on step bore-
This is my current theoretical barrel set:
Dye- ultra or boom .686 $80-100
Stock IR3 or Dye .688 $0-100
Dye- ultra or boom .690 $80-100
CP 1 piece .693 $50
Looks like +$300. It's that or a powerlyet barrel set for $210 (freak is not an option) . I was leaning towards a mixed set but now I am back to the powerlyte.
I would love to try them all but I can’t afford it. As for Dye, I am going on the barrel’s reputation alone. I have only shot SP barrels and a few CP.
I have had good luck with CP in the past, but all of this talk of step bore suggests that it might be time to try something else.
Suggestions?

The CP sets aren't too expensive, and you get 3 backs, and 2 fronts last I checked. Plus the backs are stainless. Might be an option

The powerlyte rocks. I wish there was someway I could let you try mine but alas I don't live anywhere near OH.
I understand it's a large investment but I'd strongly recommend the barrel as the ultimate alternative to the freak, if not a replacement.
Septer it is!
Ill email powerlyte today.

But if I do that and end up liking it I am going to spending $270 to get the full kit and that defeats the savings benefit compared to getting a mixed set.
I have already decided on getting it. Not too worried about the kit’s performance. Just a little sticker shock.
