Hey all you referees out there! What does it take to become one for a local field generally? I want to be one real bad, i love refing for my friends as much as i do playing

ask the field owner, they could always use more refs

Yeah ask, say you have your own mask, you should know the rules (obviously), but you still may have to take a training course. Then ref away.

and get paid!
All you need to do is hang around all the time and know all the guys. Then you can reff ewhen ever you want.

Reffing correctly hurts... I can't stand refs that stand on the side lines an call people from there. But our field is always looking for refs, just ask if the owner needs any help.

acoenfam.......that's about the most ocrrect statement.....I've taken more shots to areas that should never be hit whil reffing than ever while playing.....but when their's money on the line I ref the way I want to be reffed....heck even in Scenario games I get in the dirty, and Scenario games are dangerous for refs because there's a few hundered markers on the field instead of just 10....

Amen.... I've gotten more welts on my body reffing than I've ever gotten playin'. But that's how it should be when you ref you're there for the safety of the other players as well as to enforce the rules. It's your job to get into the middle of things when necessary.

Sure it does but it just prepares you for when you are playing. So you already know what it feels like to get hit 13 times in the stomach. After reffing you get to see what and what not to do on certain fields. You can learn a lot from reffing. Just my 2 cents.

Yea, Reffing definately improves your game because you are right there in the action to see everything, the good the bad the right the wrong.who ever says the wouldn't do it cause it hurts...shouldn't be playing paintball

im a ref for a year and half running, and I think it has to be the worse job ever known, worrying about losing your job if someone loses an eye after the 10th time of telling them to put their masks on, people complaining about guns jamming up with paint they picked up off the ground when you told them not to, people complaining about hot guns after I just chronod everyone and hten i have to do it again (policy, if one complains then all guns get checked), little kids running around and crying when they get hit after we tell the parents it hurts a little and to not have little kids play even though they are 10, for our field we have to go in at 8am to set up the 10 man ultimate air field which takes about 2 and a half hours to 3 hours to build and ref all day until you have to take down the field and wrap it up and put it away and clean all of the rental guns and masks and put them away only to leave after a 13 hour day at 9pm...and you always get the occassional "hot shot" like me or any other person with experience shooting their guns in the staging area and not having barrel covers on because their guns "go to safe mode"....I would recommend you rethink being a referee, if you want to so badly then I would sign up with the P.R.O thing for the NPPL events or something, it is actually interesting to watch rather than game after game after game of newbies sitting behind bunkers and not moving for 20 minutes. lol I only do it for the love of the game and I dont know why I still do it really. theres alot of other things involved that i do not like but i think I have written enough lol.

Try working at a different field that doesnt always have new players. Try to work at tournaments and stuff. If you really don't like to ref then don't ref. I like to ref with my friends and stuff because no matter how mad they all get or how angry or hurt they have to know that if they didnt have a ref the game would suck, it would suck very bad! As a ref its your responsibility, dont warn them about taking off their mask, say "If you take off your mask, you are gone for the next 5 games" Say the same with about picking up paint off the ground. If they do it a second time, kick em out.
Just my 2 cents

Wow, 990...you covered a full day's worth! The only thing left to add to my ref gear is....A Little Rascal! I'm wanting one (that needs a lot of work) to modify. It will be a "lay down" model that I can scoot all over the field and not be over 15"from the ground in a prone position. The last hit I took while reffing was from about 6' away (in the back of the head/neck) and I hit the ground from the impact. Now why did I want to be a ref? :again:

because you're old and feeble.....and it was recently pointed out to me that only feeble minded people seem to enjoy reffing tournaments.....LOL
