View Full Version : Freak Systems
Hello everyone,
Over here in the u.k freak systems don't seem to be used on angels ( normally boom sticks and standard barrels ).
I'm a back player and find i really need to give it a huge angle to hit the back of the sup air field. So i'm thinking longer barrel.....
i want a freak system... but i hear the seem to smeg with angels.
True/false???
i just don't want to spend the money to find its pants!!
your in put please.
Cheers...........
i have been using a freak on my 3 angels for a year and a half ( roughly) never a problem w it.

there are good and bad points to any sort of barrel or barrel system which I'm sure you know by know...the freak is fairly expensive and may or may not be worth it to you...here's my input on it...
You get 8 inserts which represent different bore sizes, a back, and a front
In choosing any barrel system you need to ask yourself...are you going to be shooting primarily one or two brands of paint exclusively? If so just get the barrels you will need to give yourself a good chance of shooting that paint accurately. The Freak (and most barrel systems) is really not for the recreational player. If you travel to events and are using various paint brands then this might be the best choice for you. It's lighter to carry the 8 inserts, and the barrel than it is to carry 4-6 barrels, and you won't know what size the paint is until you buy your first case. I initially bought a Freak at the beginning of the year, and even in using 4 or 5 different brands of paint I still only used like 3 inserts...however in the last couple of months I've seen paint sizes fluctuate significantly, even within the same manufacturer or brands, and therefore I've had to use more of the inserts. I'd still wager to say that I haven't used all 8 of them.
Are they good barrels? Well let's just say that IMO the only Smart Parts ever made that was worth a darn was their barrels. Is it worth the cost? Well that is an end user decision...If you can't afford the whole thing right now, buy a back, a tip, and one or two inserts, then buy the rest in pieces as you get the money (however it is cheaper to buy it as a set instead of building it up.)

Personally I love mine and wouldn't do without it. 8 barrels for $200 USD. A good deal to me...
better than the 300+ for the cp set.
I got the Freak barrels when they first came out and normally used only 2 or 3 sizes. Now, I use several other barrels most often (Ti BoomStick & the original Powerlyte) and seem to come back to the Freak when the others don't fit the paint well (as in the case with Emmit's comments).
It's a good versatile system, it's easy to change length or adapt it to other markers (by switching out sections). It's easy to get a good paint fit, very quickly.
The Freak is not my primary barrel system but, I always take the Freak to the field as a backup and use it when we get odd sized, paint.

I hate freaks, they don't line up as well as they should, the inserts don't hone very well, hauling all that crap around and the whole "matching" thing which wastes time and isn't that important....just ugh
Get a single bore, get to the field, play.
Make it a DYE while you're at it.

different people have different accuracy expectations.
I think a Freak is worthwhile IF you:
1) play in a wide variety of fields/tourneys and you must use field paint.
2) want the best possible accuracy/consistency.
Demonstrate this to yourself. Get an accurate gun, and use the various inserts over a chrony.
Too loose, and you find velocity varies by +/- 10 or more.
Too tight and sooner or later you get a barrel break.
Just right, and your chrono settles down to +/- 3
If you don't play tourneys, just some pickup rec ball, then these issues become less important. Who cares if you sit out a 12 minute rec game.
Whether the freak kit is "worth" the money. That's up to you and your wallet. Is a BMW M3 "worth" $50K? Depends on you.
If the issues I listed above are important to you, and you have the $$ available, then I say yes.
If $$ is very tight, then you probably shouldn't be playing hard core tourney ball anyway, since you'll easily spend that much just on paint for 1 tourney.
I'm now also looking at a boom stick kit ..... but am going to wait for the season to end b4 i make a decision ( ends for me tommorrow, where my team will lift the cup for the series )!!!!
And will then add whatever barrel set it is to my christmas list for the Mrs....
cheers....

I really laugh when people say that the Freak barrel system is too expensive. Then I ask what they have and they name off 3-5 barrels that the price range on ONE is from 65-110 dollars. I mean didn't you spend 195 and up for 3 barrels? Then if you buy a different type of marker, you have to get more instead of just buying a new back peice? The choice is simple. The Freak!

being from a smart parts sponsored team this may sound biased but im going to say ti anyways. my set up (ir3 and 68/45 new style max flow and full freak) get amazing consiistancy over the chroney, like +1 -1 worst ill get is +3-3 at the absolute worst. Now i cant really complain. my team mate who runs an lcd with preset and freak gets +2-2. and my shot groupings are amazing , using the JT maxim paint thru my set up i had gourpings the size of my hand. i have shot the boom stick which were nice but all in all i like the freak way better. before you comit to buying one you should try one out. i dont think you'll be dissapointed. as for nto affording it pm me cause i got a nice 12" with ss back i could sell for cheap.

the only problem with that is that at one time it was easier to simply build up a barrel collection over time. However today you can simply purchase the Freak in stages.
